Providence Speech & Language Services is pleased to announce that Mae Rose Tyson has joined our team as a Clinical Fellow in Speech-Language Pathology! Miss Tyson received her Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Samford University in May 2020. I am so excited for my patients and families to meet and work with this exceptional new therapist!
It's always important to remember to pause!

This is one of our favorite language techniques of all time! It's easy to go about our day, narrating what we're doing (using those good self-talk skills!), offering toys, making sure our children's needs are met, and forget completely about the all important PAUSE. If we want our children to participate in the conversation, we have to make sure we give them an opportunity!
.
.
After you show your child a toy, ask a question, or make a silly face, PAUSE. Pause for longer than you think is natural (counting slowly to 5 in your head might help). Pause with an animated, expectant look on your face to give your child a clue that it's their turn. If they don't make any kind of gesture/sound/body movement/smile etc to take their turn in the conversation within that time, then, and ONLY then, move on to try again, try a new game, or answer for them. Pausing is also extremely important to help receptive language, giving your child those extra few seconds to process the information they've heard and figure out how they can respond.

These are great suggestions for caregivers working at home on early developing sounds or expanding expressive language!
