Plantar fasciitis is pain occurring on the bottom of the foot. It is a common condition caused by repeated stretching of the tissues that support the arch of the foot. Participation in youth sports has never been more competitive. As a result, the incidence of youth sports injuries and injuries later in life related to overuse in our youth years, is also on the rise. The National Athletic Trainers’ Association, in conjunction with other leading sports medicine organizations, has published youth sports best practices. The goal of these best practice guidelines is to minimize the risk of serious injuries such as shoulder, elbow and knee conditions that require surgery and often interrupt promising athletic careers. Dr. Joshua Russell, sports medicine physician, specializes in sports injury prevention as well as diagnosis and treatment. We are pleased to present Isabella Aguilar from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Longview with this week’s Student-Athlete of the week. Isabella is a 4-year letterer in volleyball and was chosen as varsity captain her senior year. Isabella has also lettered in basketball, soccer, track and archery while achieving a 3.79 GPA. In her spare time, she enjoys fishing, reading and spending time with her family. Isabella plans to play collegiate volleyball and major in Kinesiology. Congratulations Isabella!
We are excited to present Kamryn Turner from Marshall High School with this week’s Student-Athlete of the week. Kamryn is a 3-sport athlete and an honor roll student. According to her coaches and teachers, she excels at just about anything she puts her mind to. Her tireless work ethic and attention to detail makes her one of the hardest working female student-athletes at the school. Kamryn is also a terrific teammate and friend. She frequently gives her time to help her teammates on the court and in the classroom. She loves her family and personifies what it means to be a Lady Maverick athlete. Congratulations Kamryn!

We are excited to present this week's Athlete of the Week award to Joshko Lipp from the Longview High School. Joshko started to competitively swim when he was only 7 years old. He is the district champion in the 100 meter breaststroke and will be competing in the regional championship this weekend. Joshko enjoys hanging out with friends and is planning to continue to swim in college. He is considering a career in sports medicine or business and engineering. This week’s Athlete of the Week Award goes to Cole Modgling who is a sophomore outfielder for the Northeast Texas Community College Eagles baseball team. Cole is from Castroville, TX and attended Medina Valley High School. Cole is not only competitive on the baseball field; he is also a very good academic student with a 3.5 GPA. Cole plans to continue his education and graduate with a degree in Agricultural Business. Congratulations Cole!

Jia enjoys spending time with her friends when she is not in school or practicing. She will compete for the state title again on March 21st in Corpus Christi. Way to go Jia!

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Alejandro Rojas Monsivais. Alejandro is a senior member of the Longview Lobo Soccer team and has been integral to his team’s many successes. Alejandro has received many awards including All-District, 2nd Team All-District, 1st Team All-District and has been voted as a Captain on the two-time district champion Lobo Soccer team. He also excels in the classroom as he has been recognized as an Academic All-State student-athlete, member of the National Honor Society and his GPA ranks him in the top 10% of his graduating class. Community service is also very important to Alejandro as he has volunteered at the Texas Oncology “Light the Night Pink event,” volunteered at St. Anthony’s Church and Limbs International. Congratulations, Alejandro!
