Performance Day Festival is an opportunity for students to share their music with family, friends and adoring fans. Student performers will be grouped together in cohorts of eight to 10 to perform live for one another on Zoom.
Mark your calendars now and plan to apply. Be sure to talk to your teachers about participating in one or both of these fun events! For more info, visit https://www.macphail.org/eventtypes/student-performances/

We know how important a musician's instruments are to them, and wanted to share this fundraiser to replace a stolen keyboard for teaching artist Jacob Dodd, so he can keep making music in our School Partnerships department and throughout the Twin Cities.

Twin Cities Jazz Fest, in partnership with MacPhail Center for Music, present the Twin Cities Jazz Fest Master Class Series featuring Ernest Bisong and Greg Byers.
Classically trained violinist Ernest Bisong is considered by many as a rising star on the jazz music scene in the Twin Cities. He continues to further the course of the genre by providing a fresh perspective on improvisation and harmony as he demonstrates mastery of the bebop language through a unique lens on his violin.
Greg Byers, M.M. uses his talents as a performer, composer, educator and producer to share the wisdom and beauty of great music with people of all backgrounds. His relationship with music began at 2 1/2, when he first studied cello in the Suzuki method. In 2008 Greg became the first person in the history of University of Miami to double major in Instrumental Performance/Studio Music & Jazz on cello and bass, Summa Cum Laude.
This series is supported by Hiway Federal Credit Union.
Enrollment is now open for spring semester! We hope you'll join us and connect through music.

For our first Black History post, instructor Ivory Doublette has chosen to highlight an important Black inventor whom she thinks of when teaching Sing Play Learn with MacPhail® classes:
"Red light, Green light is a beloved game in the Sing Play Learn With MacPhail program to practice impulse control. With older students we use visuals of traffic signals to direct students when to stop and when to go! Did you know that the electric automatic traffic signal was patented by Garrett Morgan in 1923? Morgan was the first African-American to own a car in the city of Cleveland!"
Ivory invites you to learn more about Garrett Morgan here: https://www.livescience.com/57231-who-invented-the-traffic-light.html and to view some sketches of his first design here: https://patents.google.com/patent/US1475024
MacPhail Center for Music is celebrating Black History Month by spotlighting several MacPhail employees as they share their journeys to amplify, celebrate, honor, connect and advocate for our communities.
We realize that Black history should not be relegated to a specific month. MacPhail is reinforcing our commitment to support and foster the next generation of Black leaders and musicians through several new and ongoing initiatives that we look forward to highlighting this month. It is vital that our mission, vision, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) commitments strengthen Black voices in the fight for racial equality.
