MWH Baby Story
36 weeks
I had my 36 week appointment with Dr.Sample. By then, the shingles had mostly cleared up and I was overall feeling better. My blood pressure stayed about the same – still slightly high for me, but within the normal limits for pregnancy. This visit was pretty smooth – I decided to get my flu shot so that I didn’t have to worry about it later and to protect myself and baby before this flu season.
We also did my Group Beta Strep (GBS) swab, and I was relieved to find out it was negative a few days later – one less thing to worry or think about for labor! We also got family pictures done this week. We’ve gotten 2 sneak peaks back, and can’t wait to see the rest!

FAQ-
I want to get pregnant. Should I wait because of COVID-19?
Pregnancy is a personal choice. It may help to think about your health and the potential risks of COVID-19. You and your ob-gyn or other health care professional should talk about the latest research on possible increased risk of severe illness during pregnancy. You also should talk about taking steps to prevent exposure to COVID-19 during pregnancy.
Overall, the risk of having more severe illness and needing more care in the hospital is still low for pregnant women. Research does not show that pregnant women are at an increased risk of death from COVID-19. But remember that people with some health conditions, such as diabetes, lung disease, and heart disease, are at increased risk of getting very sick from COVID-19.
Also, there are some reports that COVID-19 may have passed from a woman to her baby during pregnancy or delivery, but this seems to be rare.

The pandemic has resulted in domestic partners and families spending more time together at home. Not surprisingly, being in such proximity for extended periods has resulted in higher stress levels, which has increased domestic abuse worldwide.
If you or someone you know may be in a non-healthy relationship, there is help! Please talk to someone today or check out the End Abuse Wisconsin for more information.

On November 2, 2020, we will be implementing the first phase of the 21st Century Cures Act.
What does that mean for you?
1. Finalized labs and radiology (not including pathology or cytology at this time) will be immediately released to MyChart.
PLEASE NOTE: Your test results may be released prior to your provider reading them.
Once your provider reviews these tests, additional comments/interpretations may be provided.
2. All finalized progress notes, consult notes, procedure, operative notes, H & P’s, and discharge notes will be available via MyChart.
3. Another feature being added to your MyUnityPoint (MyChart), is the ability to request your health information directly from your portal account.
We hope you enjoy the latest featured artist on display at our MWH lab gallery! Her work will be displayed through the first quarter of 2021.
Rachelle Stracke of Sauk City, WI, enjoys creating her artwork using acrylics, inks, resin, and other pigments. She especially favors working with blues. Stunning work!

Today we released two, new #COVID19 vaccine resources. Access them at no cost on the SMFM website:
- Provider Fact Sheet: Provider Considerations for Engaging in COVID-19 Vaccine Counseling with Pregnant and Lactating Patients www.smfm.org/covidclinical
- Patient Fact Sheet: COVID Vaccine Advice if You Are Pregnant or Breastfeeding www.smfm.org/covidfamily
A MWH Baby Story: I recently had my 6 week postpartum visit with Dr. Wiedel. Everything went well and it was great to see her and Dr. Yanke, who delivered Maeve! It almost felt like a social hour in this time where we hardly see anyone! We talked a lot about how things were going - sleep, breastfeeding, postpartum anxiety/depression, and birth control options. Of course in this time of COVID, I’m feeling like this maternity leave isn’t at all what I pictured, and is so different from my first. I miss seeing people and having friends and family meet our new baby, but I’m grateful that my family is safe and healthy.
I feel so thankful for all the providers at Madison Women’s Health. They are exceptional and have provided amazing care throughout both of my pregnancies and deliveries, and beyond. I will forever be grateful to them for helping me with my two greatest treasures.
As the pandemic continues, we have renewed hope for turning the corner as a successful vaccine is nearly here. Many of our patients are asking good questions about the safety and availability of these vaccines in pregnancy. Frontline healthcare workers are considered first tier for vaccine administration.
The vaccine has not been studied in pregnant or breastfeeding women, but SMFM recommends that healthcare workers who are considered prioritized for vaccination be offered the vaccine if pregnant. The SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is not a live vaccine. The theoretical risk of fetal harm from mRNA vaccines is very low. If your employer offers vaccination, we can discuss this SMFM guidance at your next prenatal care visit. https://s3.amazonaws.com/cdn.smfm.org/media/2591/SMFM_Vaccine_Statement_12-1-20_(final).pdf
