Today is Election Day. Regardless of your political affiliation or beliefs, it's important all Americans take part in the process.
If you are turned away at the polls, this is what you tell them: “Give me a provisional ballot with a receipt, as is required by law.”
If you already mailed in your ballot, you should confirm that your ballot was accepted as valid. There are links to check all 50 states in this article from CNET.
Make sure your vote is counted!

“I don't have a lot of money to invest so you probably don't want to work with me.” This is something I hear quite a bit and is absolutely wrong. It is a myth perpetrated from the days of brokers calling you out of the phone book to sell you individual stocks or products.
Yes, financial planning does have to do with money however a financial plan can benefit you whether you are living paycheck-to-paycheck or you have more money than you or your children will ever spend in their lifetimes.

Turning the calendar to January means reviewing & possibly adjusting your retirement contributions. The limits have not changed from 2020 but I bet your financial situation has.
The maximum contribution to a traditional or Roth IRA remains $6,000 while for a 401(k) it is $19,500. If you have a solo 401(k) or are a participant in a SEP IRA, the limit is $57,000. However, there are some caveats to these where it’s worth consulting with a professional.
Remember the IRS only considers your age at the end of the year. If you will turn 50 at some point during 2021, you can start your catch-up contribution now. There’s no need to make a big lump sum contribution after your birthday. For a traditional or Roth IRA you can add an additional $1,000 and for a 401(k) an additional $6,500.
Again these are the maximum you can contribute to your retirement account. Please don't let these stop you from contributing. Whether it's $100 or the maximum, the important thing is that you get started!

Any good plan needs a team to help make it work. This typical includes family, friends, doctors, therapists, teachers, caregivers, and more. That’s even before we get to other professionals like financial planners, estate attorneys, and accountants. Who you surround yourself can have a tremendous impact on your well-being. Make sure you do proper due diligence and check that they are putting your interests first.

No matter what you’re trying to achieve, it all starts with believing in yourself. When you get down or have doubts, remember that no journey is a straight path to success. Encountering failure is an opportunity to learn and grow (as all the gurus are quick to point out).
Take the time to reflect (bad pun alert!) and practice some self-care as a way to recharge before pressing Onward to Greatness (h/t @dasarteyarnway).

I like to say financial planning is a marriage of Art and Science. The science consists of technical skills like cash flow analysis, time value of money, portfolio allocation, benefits analysis, etc. The art aspect of financial planning is where the real value lies. It is marrying the technical to the personal and emotional pieces of your life.
You can have a solid technical plan that meets all your goals and objectives however that does not matter if it is not aligned with your beliefs and lifestyle. More than likely, you won't be excited about it and probably won’t follow through with it.

One in four adults in the U.S. — or 61 million people — have disabilities that affect their daily lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ricks points out that the figure goes up significantly when including people of all ages, caretakers, and family members.
“It's not a small community by any means,” Ricks says, estimating from studies he’s reviewed in preparing to start Haystack. “There are firms that focus on that community, but certainly not enough for 110 million people."

The recent news of Reddit traders causing extreme price movements in certain stocks and potentially “taking down” hedge funds is another in a long line of events. While the details may change, the overarching theme repeats itself over and over. Maybe some of your friends, family, or colleagues are taking part and making money from it. The FOMO would be strong and you feel like you “lost” money. I get it. We’re all human and struggle with those feelings.
This classic sketch by @behaviorgap reminds us that time in the market is more important than timing the market. If you’re feeling antsy, reach out to your advisor or planner and have a conversation. Reviewing your plan can be re-assuring and maybe there are other reasons to make adjustments.
Stock prices are out of your control. Continuing to save towards specific goals and understanding what you’re working towards is well within your control. Remember to focus on that.

Norman Greenbaum wrote “Spirit in the Sky” in 1969. He owns 50% of the publishing rights which means he gets about $10,000 every time the song is used in a movie, TV show, or ad. According to IMDB, the song has been used 90 times as part of the soundtrack in movies and TV shows. It’s been used in dozens of major ads and the video game “Rock Band 2”.
By my estimation, Greenbaum has made over $2,000,000 and counting from other people using his song. This does not include any other monies or royalties from touring, performing, record sales, etc. It also does not include any money made from the different artists, at least 14 by my internet sleuthing, covering the song.
So what does this have to do with financial planning? EVERYTHING. Presumably, the song will still be used after Norman passes. Does he have proper estate planning? We’ve seen multiple artists have no will or clear estate plan in place (e.g. Prince & Aretha Franklin) which means years of legal battles for their heirs. Are the royalties paid to an LLC, S Corp, or to him personally? That impacts his taxes. We could then talk about attorney costs for protecting his intellectual property. Lots and lots of different planning aspects are at play.
Shout out to the latest @RadioGaGaPodcast episode on “Spirit in the Sky” for inspiring this post & for some of the information used within. Check out Justine’s other episodes if you’re interested in learning more about other songs, artists, and albums!

I mean do I need to say anything else? The Hall of Famer, 13 time World Series champion (!!!), & all-time great @yankees catcher nailed it.
The last 11 months have been a great reminder that even if we do not know exactly where we are going or what the future holds (and let’s face it not many of us do) having a plan to help navigate through challenges can be beneficial.
The beauty of a financial plan is that it changes along with your life. New job? Time to update your income! New house? Time to adjust the mortgage information! A new addition to the family? Get that 529 account set-up and start those contributions!
Also don’t feel like you have to tackle every aspect of your finances at once. That can be overwhelming. Find your biggest “pain point” and start there. Then build on that. The key is to just get started.

Yesterday was about fun in the snow. Today was a lesson on good deeds. Big boy helped me clear the crosswalks on our corner as they do not get taken care of by the @MTA. Navigating the corner quickly becomes a hazard and requires you to climb over piles of snow and ice. We made sure the curb was cleared so it was accessible for everyone.

If the focus is only on your investments, you’re missing a big part of your finances. Financial planning incorporates cash flow, insurance, investments, tax planning, estate planning, and more. There absolutely will be times where one area is a priority or more important however ignoring one aspect completely typically does not lead to financial success. Be sure you’re working with a professional that can guide you through all these areas.

Today was our first indoor family outing in over a year. Only fitting it was the @amnh & visiting the dinosaurs. We even ran into friends we haven’t seen in months!
We were very nervous what it would be like and if we would feel comfortable. Good news is that everyone was wearing masks and (for the most part) was conscious about distance. Ideally there would have been less people in the museum. Overall it was a fun afternoon.

It was extremely fun to chat with @beyourowndamnguru on the #NewSkool podcast. Give it a listen at the link below or from the LinkTree in my profile.

I got my vaccine shot today. The operation at the @javitscenter was very impressive. I had the shot (Johnson & Johnson in case you were interested) in my arm in under 15 minutes & was out the door in less than 30 minutes after the observation period.
A big thank you to all those working there. They were incredibly helpful & pleasant to interact with. It was very easy to navigate my way through. If you live in New York & Javits is convenient for you it's worth it. Highly suggest going there.
Remember, it's important to others who are vulnerable that we get vaccinated. There are many disabled and special needs individuals who cannot leave their homes until the virus is under control. Getting the vaccine is not only about you, but it's also about controling the spread and ensuring that EVERYONE in our society can safely stop isolating and sheltering at home.
