Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, which set a record this week with 50 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, has announced that it will temporarily suspend elective procedures requiring an overnight stay, beginning Monday, October 26. In light of the increases in COVID-19 cases in the region, the medical center has made the decision to suspend elective surgical procedures that require an overnight stay for a period of two weeks, effective Monday, October 26. At the close of this two-week period, medical center leadership will re-evaluate based on hospital utilization and staffing.

Maury Regional Health administered the first COVID-19 vaccines to frontline health care workers today, just hours after receiving the shipment. Among the first to receive the vaccine are physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and emergency medical services personnel.
The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is a two-dose regimen with the second dose administered 21 days following the initial dose. The organization received an allotment to vaccinate more than 1,000 providers and anticipates the second doses for administration to arrive in approximately three weeks.
Because vaccine supplies are limited, the CDC recommends that initial vaccine be allocated to health care personnel and long-term care facility residents. As vaccine availability increases, vaccination recommendations will expand to include more groups.

Maury Regional Health CEO Alan Watson, Chief Medical Officer Martin Chaney, M.D., and Infectious Disease Specialist Deborah Goldsmith, M.D., serve as champions for COVID-19 vaccination and have now joined the ranks of our health care family who have been vaccinated.
"We trust the vaccine and the science behind it. We believe that this vaccine will begin to turn the tide of the pandemic and allow us to return to normalcy within our society. In the meantime, we ask that you continue to mask and social distance in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19," said Watson.
A risk assessment tool developed by Georgia Tech estimates the chance that at least one COVID-19-positive individual will be present at a gathering, based on the event size. Assess the risk for a gathering where you live or work at https://covid19risk.biosci.gatech.edu.
Active cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in our region. As of 12/22, there were 2,931 active cases in Maury Regional Health's six-county service area of Maury, Giles, Lewis, Lawrence, Marshall and Wayne counties. This represents an increase of 449 cases over just a five-day period.

For more than 20 years, employees, physicians and volunteers at Maury Regional Medical Center have been providing gifts of coats and sweaters for Maury County school children through the annual Holiday Hugs program. This year, a total of 624 children received a gift from the program to help make the holidays a little brighter.

It's always an exciting time when we welcome the first baby of a new year at Maury Regional Medical Center. Introducing Mia Dani Marie Busby, who was born at 5:19 this morning. Mia is the daughter of Justin Busby and Haley Spanninger of Lawrenceburg. She weighed 4 pounds, 4 ounces and is 17.5 inches long. Appointments are now available for vaccination events in Columbia the week of February 22. New phases open 2/22 for those age 65 and older and Phase 1B in addition to Phase 1a1 and 1a2. REMINDER: Marketplace Insurance Special Enrollment Period continues until May 15, 2021
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is offering a special enrollment period (SEP) for individuals and families to obtain or update their health insurance coverage. This SEP is available to all Marketplace-eligible consumers who are submitting a new application or updating an existing application. The enrollment period continues until May 15, 2021.

Congratulations to Maury Regional Medical Center Critical Care Unit nurse Daniel Patterson, BSN, RN, on receiving the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for the month of February.
In the submitted nomination form, Patterson's nominator shared how they "had never seen a team more devoted to their patients" — including all the staff they encountered in the Critical Care Unit but especially Patterson. According to the nominator, Patterson helped to break down all the medical jargon into layman's terms and delivered information in a way that was both kind and professional while also consistently helping to bridge communication between the patient and their loved ones.
