This holiday season, it remains vital that we all continue to do our part to slow the spread of illness — particularly as cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in the southern Middle Tennessee region.
Celebrating with members of your own household or hosting virtual gatherings are the safest options that pose the least amount of risk. Maury Regional Health offers a free service to help individuals find coverage through enrollment in a federal marketplace plan or TennCare. In addition, our counselors can provide guidance on financial assistance for your medical care, so please don't delay care due to financial concerns without speaking to one of our counselors about your options.
The deadline to enroll in a federal marketplace plan is December 15. If you would like to learn more about available options, call us at 931.490.7251 (available Monday–Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or visit MauryRegional.com/Do-Not-Delay-Care.
According to a risk assessment tool from Georgia Tech, there is currently a 39% chance of at least 1 in 10 people at a gathering in Maury County having COVID-19 even if they aren't yet exhibiting symptoms. At a gathering of 25 people, those odds increase to 71%, while a gathering of 50 leads to a 91% risk. And that one case can lead to many more, spreading among event participants and then into the community.
You can do your part to slow the spread by wearing a mask, social distancing and frequently washing your hands. Avoid large gatherings and, if gathering in a small group, make plans in outdoor or well-ventilated areas and encourage masking for all participants.

Plus, to allow families more time together, Zoom has even removed its 40-minute time limit for Thanksgiving Day so family gatherings aren't cut short.

Maury Regional Health administered the first COVID-19 vaccines to frontline health care workers today, just hours after receiving the shipment. Among the first to receive the vaccine are physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and emergency medical services personnel.
The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is a two-dose regimen with the second dose administered 21 days following the initial dose. The organization received an allotment to vaccinate more than 1,000 providers and anticipates the second doses for administration to arrive in approximately three weeks.
Because vaccine supplies are limited, the CDC recommends that initial vaccine be allocated to health care personnel and long-term care facility residents. As vaccine availability increases, vaccination recommendations will expand to include more groups.

Katie is a social worker on the palliative care team at Maury Regional Medical Center. In her role, she works with patients living with chronic conditions: providing emotional support to encourage them, to reassure them, to give them hope.
Each day, Katie prays with COVID-19 inpatients at Maury Regional. She sometimes even cries with them, too. She has held iPads over beds to connect patients with loved ones and offered comforting words on dark days. For some, she has been there as they took their last breath.
"To me, this has been a great honor but also a tremendous responsibility," Katie said. "But I believe God has placed me in this role for a time such as this. Our patients are battling with physical, emotional and spiritual fatigue during their hospitalizations. They need our support, encouragement and hope."
Thank you, Katie, for sharing your story and for all you do for our patients and their family members. We are grateful, always, for the compassion, resilience and skill you and all members of our care team exhibit each day.

Like so many others, back in the spring of 2020, Anthony's life changed drastically. He'd been furloughed from his position in the entertainment and hospitality industry, watching alongside the world as the gravity of the situation — and our new reality — set in.
"Before too long, though, I realized that I wanted to lend a hand rather than sit idly at home while out of work," Anthony said. "So I pursued a role as a registrar to help support the medical staff at Maury Regional from the administrative side."
Now, Anthony works as a registrar in the COVID-19 infusion clinic on the campus of Maury Regional Medical Center, where eligible high-risk COVID-19 patients receive monoclonal antibody treatments to launch their body's immune response.
"In my role, I have spoken with many patients suffering from this virus and have heard their personal accounts of tragedy and hardship," Anthony said. "All of these encounters take an emotional toll, but the feeling of contributing my small part to the patients and staff at Maury Regional keeps me motivated to come back each day — especially after witnessing the incredible effort and sacrifices the people I work alongside make."
Thank you, Anthony, for sharing your story and for all that you do for our patients and their families. We are grateful, always, for the compassion, resilience and skill you and all members of our care team exhibit each day.
For more information about monoclonal antibody treatments, visit MauryRegional.com/Monoclonal-Antibodies.

Although protection from a SARS-CoV-2 vaccination begins about 10 days after the initial dose of the vaccine, a second dose of the vaccine is needed to develop an immune response that will last. An individual is at risk of contracting a COVID-19 infection in the interim between vaccine administration and the development of immunity, so it is important that preventative measures (social distancing, masking, etc.) be continued after vaccination.
