What is Men's Health?
1. Male Infertility and Testicular Disorders
2. Men’s Cancers
Cancer is the number two killer in men, after heart disease. The most commonly diagnosed cancer in men is prostate cancer, however more men die from lung cancer. The top 5 cancers in men also includes colon cancer, bladder cancer and skin cancers. At the Los Angeles Men’s Health Center, we focus on treatment of urologic cancers which include prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancers. We also provide advice on prevention for all cancers and have a dedicated network of physicians who can help diagnose and treat other cancers should there be a need.
3. Prostate Health
The prostate is a walnut sized organ located at the base of the bladder of men surrounding the urethra. Its main function is to secrete an alkaline fluid which helps neutralize the acidity of the vagina, helping to protect sperm and increase their longevity. The ejaculate contains about 75% prostatic fluid. .
4. Sexual Health
At the Los Angeles Men’s Health Center we take a comprehensive approach to sexual health. Our team approach utilizes not only urologic surgeons, but also endocrinologists, and therapists focused on pelvic floor dysfunction and sexual disorders to achieve the best results. Read below to learn more about common sexual complaints.
5. Stone Disease
Kidney Stones are deposits of minerals and salts that form when the urine is heavily concentrated allowing for these substances to form hard shells inside the kidney. Stones can also form secondary to an infection or can become a source of urinary tract infections in other patients. A kidney stone itself does not usually cause pain, it is the passage of kidney stones that can be painful. Smaller stones, usually up to 5 mm can pass on their own with adequate hydration. Larger stones, however require surgery.
6. Gay Men’s Health
At every stage in life, men are prone to different health risks. Even though these risks go beyond sexual orientation, there are certain health issues that gay men face more commonly than their straight counterparts.
7.Top 10 Health Risks in Men
Although women are catching up, men still have higher rates of smoking and drinking which makes them more susceptible to certain diseases. The following is a list of common health risks faced by American men.
8. Urinary Complaints
Urination is one of the most complex actions our bodies perform. It involves input from the brain, the spinal cord and the end organs themselves including the bladder and urethra. Different neural pathways help coordinate the function. Before we learn how to hold our urine and void on demand, urination is a reflex that causes the bladder to store urine and empty it when it’s filled to capacity. In men problems with urination are usually a result of an obstruction or a malfunctioning bladder. The bladder is a large muscle that is innervated by many nerves.
Dear Patients,
After years of training in urologic surgery, I have been exposed to every facet of men’s urologic disease. Through it all, however, I never came across a center dedicated to the putting together the pieces. While urinary complaints, prostate issues and erectile dysfunction all fall within the realm of urology, they are all connected with other conditions which require a thorough assessment and health maintenance program to achieve optimal results. For many men, for example, erectile dysfunction serves as the initial warning sign of coronary artery disease. Obesity is linked with low testosterone syndrome, as well as stone disease, kidney failure and so on. With this in mind, we created the Providence St. John's Men's Health Center.
Essentially we are a one-stop shop for men’s health needs, including prevention, maintenance, and treatment. At your initial visit you will be assessed for risk factors for major health issues based on your age, lifestyle and history to create a personalized care plan for you to follow. For men with a primary physician, we will work closely with your doctor to ensure optimal results. We have developed a network of dedicated physicians, dieticians and therapists to help our patients reach their goal. For men without a primary physician we will connect you with physicians whose goal is your total health.
Sincerely,
Mehran Movassaghi MD
