Established in September 2017, Andreas and Renee Typaldos, ,introduce Merakia, a word that modern Greeks use to describe doing something with all your being, with passion, putting all your heart and soul into your work… may result in madness!
Greek mountainthief was the nickname given to men and women of greek bands of mountain highwaymen ("klephts,"meaning thieves) and irregular militia ("armatoloi") who were the revolutionary backbone of the greek war of independence of 1821. When fighting the ottomans in the mountainous terrain, these mountainthieves would feed themselves by stealing sheep and other livestock grazing on the mountains and cooking them on a makeshift spit. Quite a visual, huh?
Merakia's own mountainthief and spitfire is Athenian chef Tasso Ballas who instilled the wild and woolly creative spark of the Greeks into our menu.
