Nothing is more life-enhancing than the company of family and friends. But while our family members come to us by birth, we actually get to choose our friends. After a lifetime of making lasting friendships at college, in the workplace, on the golf course, and in the carpool line at school, older people are well prepared to continue that trend in retirement, Read more in our blog "New Friends Can Make Your Retirement Years Golden" https://welcometomonarchlanding.com/2020/09/24/new-friends-can-make-your-retirement-years-golden/

A key benefit of textile arts is their ability to induce calm in their practitioners. In fact, the relaxation provided by knitting is similar to what is experienced during meditation or praying. This can reduce blood pressure and lower the heart rate. In ‘normal’ times, they’re avid travelers and cruise enthusiasts. Our residents have a very active travel club. Because the pandemic has prevented them from pursuing their passion, a lighthearted ‘itch’ for those bitten by the travel bug was ‘brought’ to them. For the past five weeks, we held a Love Boat Cruise to the Hawaiian Islands. The multi-sensory event simulated a Hawaiian cruise, with special activities including a bon voyage party, games of ‘beach hockey’ on the community’s putting green, hula lessons and contests, a complimentary coffee tasting, entertainment, and more. Hawaiian-themed meals and tropical cocktails were served at dinner. “This was a great opportunity for us to provide our residents with some travel-related fun without them having to leave the community,” said Nancy Capezzuto, lifestyles assistant. “It’s been a tough time for everyone, and this was a way for us to share some sunshine. You could see from their smiles that they had a wonderful time.”

Today is #NationalKindnessDay so we thought it'd be a perfect opportunity to share an update on our outdoor rock garden. Remember when we created beautifully painted rocks for the Proton Cancer Center? They've been moved to their winter home—the lobby of Northwestern Medicine Proton Center. When we went to move the rocks, a staff member told us a heartwarming story. This summer, a young pediatric cancer patient was delighted when she was told she could select a rock to keep from the garden. Very excited, she then asked if she could select more than one, so she could take some back to her friends staying at the Ronald McDonald House Near Central DuPage Hospital. They were all children receiving treatment at the Proton Cancer Center too. The staff found a bag for her to use to put additional rocks in. It sure makes our project worthwhile!

The Guest Relations Specialist at The Springs Health and Rehab Center of Monarch Landing noted that it’s impossible for her not to love the residents in her charge. One such resident became what Rollins said was her best friend, role model, and greatest cheerleader.
