There are no reports of toxicosis from spotted lantern flies, but since this is a newly introduced and poorly studied insect, there may be things we don't know. In its native Asian environment, it prefers to lay its eggs on a tree known to contain toxic compounds, to which it appears immune. Some other insects that do similar things (e.g. monarchs accumulate cardiac glycosides from milkweeds) can concentrate the toxic components within their bodies, keeping them safe from the toxins while using the accumulated toxins as defense mechanisms from predators, who avoid them because they're toxic. So, it's certainly possible there is some low level of toxicity in the insect--I found some information that indicates that birds tend to avoid eating spotted lantern flies, suggesting that they are at least very unpalatable if not toxic. Ingestion of most insects can cause mild GI upset from the mechanical irritation of the chitinous exoskeleton (cicadas are famous for this), but if the GI signs are more than mild, I would be concerned about some degree of toxicity from the insect. Many toxic insects (e.g. fireflies, monarchs, etc) concentrate cardiac glycosides; since early signs of cardiac glycoside toxicosis is gastrointestinal upset, if a patient is showing more severe signs than vomiting/diarrhea (e.g. weakness), I would monitor cardiac parameters just to be on the safe side. Since we don't know if/how these insects are toxic, the only recommendation is to keep pets away from them and treat symptomatically/supportively if signs occur. #spottedlanternfly #mountlaurelnj #mountlaurel #newjersey #burlingtoncounty

PeeWee had spinal surgery with our Neuro Team at the end of July and we got a great update this week! "Hello Dr. Cohen and Kailyn, this past weekend we let Peewee out on her own in our fenced in back yard and she is loving it. We have been keeping her on a leash but we felt it was time to let her run free and boy is she running free. I even thought that I saw her smile. Her hair is mostly grown back and her scar is just about completely covered. We have also been taking her for walks on a leash in the neighborhood for the last 2 months or so. She walks close to a mile on every walk. Words cannot express the feelings that we both have for you guys. Peewee is our whole life and our world revolves around her. Thank you both so so much for saving our little baby. We will forever be indebted to both of you. Oliver, Linda, and Peewee!!"

If you think you see him, please snap a photo and call/text 6094108514. Please DO NOT CHASE!
