I plan to continue participating in this work until that world is our reality.” We at the Alliance continue to raise awareness around intimate partner violence so we can end the cycle. #PurpleThursday #NYGoesPurple4DV #DVAM2020

The group has inspired participants who felt discouraged and stuck, and it has inspired hope." - Tara Fox Tara is a counselor at the Alliance and runs a support group for those who are healing from sexual violence. Check out another submission from our DOT youth photo curriculum project. We're highlighting perspectives by the youth relating to sexual and teen dating violence. This art features a bystander dealing with thoughts that anyone might experience before confronting a situation they see. Our program often highlights "the 3 Ds" while discussing ways to intervene. Here is what a youth thought about the messaging: "Even if the bystanders believe sexual and teen dating violence is wrong, they still may be afraid to speak up because some may fear of being targeted by the perpetrator themselves. They fear getting involved could have negative social consequences on them. Many times the bystanders go through confusion whether the victim needs help or not. When you don’t know the person, it’s more difficult to take action so bystanders choose to not speak up." This week we're sharing our DOT youth photo curriculum project to highlight youth perspectives on the issues of sexual and teen dating violence in our communities. Here is what a youth thought about this harmful text message: "This photo represents toxicity in a relationship. A young girl is tired of going through bad terms with her boyfriend. There’s nothing but blame, hurtful words, and verbal abuse. She’s ready to leave all of it behind, but he isn’t ready. He hits her with the 'I love you' but she wants to be left alone for good. He claims he’ll change his ways and become a better person, but you see no changes at all. The issue is, she loves him a lot, but it’s hard to take a stand to leave someone. She finally leaves and he leaves her alone." *blocked* To see more check the link: bit.ly/36yhc8P #TDVAM2021 #teendatingviolence #datingviolence

Our youth unpacked potentially harmful and toxic narratives that might pop up in fairytales. “As a little kid, we are showered with fairytales, and we expect real life to be like that. Some people grow up with the concept of ‘love conquers all’ and ‘if you really love someone, you accept them for who they are.’ What some don’t understand is that there are limitations. A woman or man could mistreat their significant other but then randomly start being affectionate and say ‘if you really loved me you would understand.’ This leads to the person being abused to stay and sometimes some stay until it’s to late. They don’t come out because they thought it was okay and didn’t want it to be true.” What are some toxic behaviors you’ve seen depicted in kids’ movies? ICYMI: This week, we’re sharing our DOT youth photo curriculum project to highlight youth perspectives on the issues of sexual and teen dating violence in our communities. In this art piece, our youth depicts safe spaces survivors can rely on to feel supported after they’ve experienced dating or sexual violence. This is what the youth had to say: “The creation of safe spaces within a community can aid in these places being a temporary important place for survivors. Many survivors flee violence and need places that are developed for their particular needs. Being in a safe space to talk about what they have been through can make them feel supported by others and know that they aren’t alone. There are people in the community that care and are willing to help.” If you are a survivor, know that you are not alone. #TDVAM2021 #teendatingviolence #datingviolence #safespaces
