UPDATE: State of Emergency Renewal Extension Expires September 30, 2020
📷
Updated Information Provided by the Department of Health
Released September 30, 2020
Nursing licenses that expire on September 30, 2020, and have renewal fees that were postmarked or delivered to the Department of Health by September 30, will be considered by the Department as active until October 16, 2020. This is not an extension of the deadline to submit renewals, just an extension of active status to allow for processing times.
Since renewal processing delays may occur in October, due to a high volume of renewals being submitted at the end of September. Users of Provider Credential Search are cautioned about using the Last Issue and Expiration dates reflected on our website until processing can be completed.

Adult Family Homes are not being fined thousands of dollars for not having fit tested N95 masks.
Fit tested N95 masks are required if your home is attempting to serve COVID positive residents. However, it is well known that the masks are in short supply and fit testing is hard to obtain for long term care settings. If you are attempting to serve COVID positive residents and cannot obtain N95 masks or fit testing due to supply or cost, simply document the attempts you have made.
Representatives from DOH, DSHS, L&I, AFH Council and other organizations representing SNF/ALF will be meeting this week to discuss how to manage this requirement. As the requirements is refined, we will share with you want is required. Many phone calls have come in that people feel they must act now, you do not. Having N95s is not a requirement for visitation.

Sojourner Truth :
Most people recognize Sojourner Truth as a fervent abolitionist who was able to escape slavery and advocate for the rights of blacks and women, but many don’t know about her own career as a nurse. During her enslavement, she served as a nurse to the Dumont family. When she achieved freedom, she worked for the National Freedman’s Relief Association in Washington DC. As part of this position, she often spoke before Congress, advocating for nursing education and formal training programs.

𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐭 𝐓𝐮𝐛𝐦𝐚𝐧:
Harriet Tubman is another recognizable name from history, but her work as a nurse is often overshadowed by her efforts to help over 300 slaves travel the underground railroad to freedom. During the Civil War, she also earned a reputation as a capable nurse with extensive knowledge of natural and herbal remedies. She treated many soldiers who were suffering from dysentery and smallpox and remarkably managed to stay healthy. When the war ended, she continued to care for others and eventually helped to start a home for the elderly.

⚠️ Tips to prevent falls:
1. Stay Active - Physical activity helps to keep your core strong and improves strength, balance, coordination and flexibility.
2. Wear Sensible Shoes - Flimsy slippers and flip flops don't provide the stabilization needed as we age.
3. Light Up Your Living Space - Walking around in poorly lit areas can create a hazard. Be sure you're able to clearly see anything in your path within and around your home.
Stay safe!

It's the small things, like taking it slow, even when there are other things that have to get done. And on those hard days, reminding them that they did it yesterday and they can do it again. Kindness and patience go a long way!

🏃🏽♀️Did you know that nurses walk a 5k every shift?
On average, nurses walk four to five miles every shift 12-hour shift they work. That’s a lot of walking.
Compare that to the average person who only walks about 2.5 miles on average. Nurses walk double the distance every shift that the average population does daily. This interesting fact about nursing proves why nurses need a comfortable pair of shoes!
🥿What type of shoes do you wear to stay comfortable on your shift?
🏥Clarissa Harlowe Barton, known as Clara, is one of the most honored women in American history. Barton risked her life to bring supplies and support to soldiers in the field during the Civil War. She founded the American Red Cross in 1881, at age 59, and led it for the next 23 years. Her understanding of the ways she could provide help to people in distress guided her throughout her life. By the force of her personal example, she opened paths to the new field of volunteer service. Her intense devotion to serving others resulted in enough achievements to fill several ordinary lifetimes. Thank you, Clara for your contribution to nursing!
Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States, and that statistic may even be underreported.
Did you know?
💥More than 34 million people in the United States have diabetes, and 1 in 5 of them don’t know they have it.
💥 More than 88 million US adults—over a third—have pre-diabetes, and more than 84% of them don’t know they have it.
💥 Type 2 diabetes accounts for approximately 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes; type 1 diabetes accounts for approximately 5-10%.
💥 In the last 20 years, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled as the American population has aged and become more overweight or obese.

Many things can cause a fall. Your eyesight, hearing, and reflexes might not be as sharp as they were when you were younger. Diabetes, heart disease, or problems with your thyroid, nerves, feet, or blood vessels can affect your balance. Some medicines can cause you to feel dizzy or sleepy, making you more likely to fall. Other causes include safety hazards in the home or community environment.
Scientists have linked several personal risk factors to falling, including muscle weakness, problems with balance and gait, and blood pressure that drops too much when you get up from lying down or sitting (called postural hypotension). Foot problems that cause pain and unsafe footwear, like backless shoes or high heels, can also increase your risk of falling.
Confusion and medications can sometimes lead to falls as well. Here are some tips to keep you safe https://zcu.io/F3EY
That one is easy!

Following a regular physical activity program can reduce an older adult’s chances of falling, even when done as little as three times per week.
However, simply walking is not enough. While brisk walking is good cardio exercise, exercising specifically to improve strength and balance is important for reducing falls for older adults.
See the National Institute on Aging’s Go4Life exercises for strength and balance at go4life.nia.nih.govexternal icon for specific suggestions.

Each year, millions of older people—those 65 and older—fall. In fact, more than one out of four older people falls each year, but less than half tell their doctor. Falling once doubles your chances of falling again.
Falls Are Serious and Costly.
One out of five falls causes a serious injury such as broken bones or a head injury.
*Each year, 3 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries.
*Over 800,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture.
*Each year at least 300,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures.
*More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling, usually by falling sideways.
*Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
*In 2015, the total medical costs for falls totaled more than $50 billion. Medicare and Medicaid shouldered 75% of these costs.
So how can you prevent falls? Check out the CDC's recommendations here https://zcu.io/32cG

Having a career is hard. Marriage is hard. Parenting is hard. How do you balance all 3?
Work and children can take up all your time. But don't forget to spend time with your partner too - just the two of you. If it's impossible to have time together once a week, start off by having a night out once a month. It will help you to reconnect and enjoy each other's company again, which is something many couples lose sight of when they have busy family lives. When you spend time together, try to make a rule not to talk about work or your children - or at least not to talk about them and nothing else.
Celebrate their life.

Is a career in nursing in your future?
It is predicted that the shortage of primary care physicians will create an even greater demand for Family Nurse Practitioners.
Recent research from the Association of American Medical Colleges found that the United States could face a shortage of up to 55,200 primary care physicians by 2032, due in part to a growing, aging population.
Without enough primary care physicians to care for the population, the demand for Family Nurse Practitioners will be high, especially in those states where FNPs have full practice authority. In March 2020, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) reported that the number of Nurse Practitioners reached an all-time high of 290,000. We expect this number to continue to grow.

It's easy to overlook family time when you are balancing a career and a family.
But try to pick 1 evening a week when all members of your family can do something together. This doesn't have to involve anything special, it could be something really simple like having popcorn while watching a DVD or taking the dog for a walk.
The main thing is that you do it together, every week. Having a family meal together can also be an important part of your routine as it's the perfect opportunity to catch up with each other's news. Even if you can't eat together every night, try to sit around the table as a family at least once a week.

Dorothea Dix was an early 19th century activist who drastically changed the medical field during her lifetime. She championed causes for both the mentally ill and indigenous populations. By doing this work, she openly challenged 19th century notions of reform and illness. Additionally, Dix helped recruit nurses for the Union army during the Civil War. As a result, she transformed the field of nursing.
Thank you, Dorothea, for your innovation and hard work.
