Lameness in horses is invariably connected to hoof imbalance. Medio-lateral imbalance was shown to affect the point of force (Wilson et al 1998) and this change in the loading of the hoof resonates through out the rest of the limb. The detrimental effects of this change in load on the hoof structure can be clearly seen in the pre trim part of the video. Chateau et al (2002) used a similar set up in its assessment of the effects on the interphalangeal joints alluding to the conformation predisposing to injury of these joints. While a certain amount of asymmetry is considered normal (Roland at al 2003) they should be controlled as they affect biomechanics of not only the foot but change muscle tension and higher musculoskeletal balance (kilmartin 2019). A spiral trim was tested in this video to see its effect on the loading pattern. Post trim the load decends more centrally thought to improve loading of the entire limb.

Water remains as important for your horse in the winter as it is in the summer. As a matter of fact, decreased water consumption in the winter is thought to be the primary inducing factor for impaction colic — although there are other predisposing factors such as poor hay quality, lack of exercise, internal parasites and dental problems.
Impaction colic is essentially constipation and most often includes the accumulation of hard, dry fecal material in the colon. The usual signs of impending impaction colic are depression, a decreased appetite, and decreased production and dryness of manure.
Studies demonstrate that you can increase your horse's winter water consumption if you provide access to heated water, but ONLY if that is the only source of water available. You can read more on winter water consumption our website at https://aaep.org/horsehealth/winter-water-consumption
