The National Portrait Gallery Captures History in More Ways Than One The National Portrait Gallery (http://npg.si.edu/) has a long history that began many years before it hosted paintings of presidents and other public figures. During the Civil War, it served as a makeshift hospital, and poet Walt Whitman even helped to treat wounded soldiers here. President Abraham Lincoln commemorated his second inauguration with a bash in the Great Hall. Clara Barton, who would go on to found the Red Cross, started her career here as a clerk for the Patent Office Commissioner. The building has undergone major renovations since its earliest days, but it still retains that air of history from all those decades ago. Its exhibits are constantly changing to showcase new portraits—currently, you can see portraits of Ralph Lauren, Madeleine Albright, and many others—and other categories of art at the National Portrait Gallery.
