September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Close to 800,000 people die by suicide each year worldwide. That’s nearly one death every 40 seconds (save.org). It’s time for a change. It’s OK to not be OK. However, if you need a sign to reach out for help for yourself, a loved one, or a client—consider this it. Suicide is frequently associated with personality issues (such as occurring within “dysregulated and borderline states”) and may co-occur with depression and anxiety disorders. Persons who repetitively injure themselves have been diagnosed with depression, bipolar, anorexia, bulimia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress, dissociative, anxiety and panic states, and impulse-control states. “I will always be grateful to PCH and the healing journey I embarked on through my treatment. I’ve experienced a profound transformation and feel that I've really stepped into my authenticity. I learned so much about myself, feel prepared with tools that I’ll use throughout life, and I achieved all the goals I set forth when I first checked in. I enjoyed working with all PCH staff, especially my treatment team. Although the Zoom virtual format for groups could be exhausting at times, I think PCH did a great job at adapting to the safety regulations.” – Client Testimony There’s nothing we love more than hearing about the obstacles our clients have overcome and how PCH has helped give them tools to use in life beyond our treatment center. “At PCH Treatment Center, we use a culturally sensitive therapeutic model that acknowledges the trauma of systemic racism and the necessity of a dualistic perspective that holds the autonomy of the individual within the framework of the collective.” Learn more about PCH’s approach to psychological and therapeutic repair for racial trauma in our article: https://bit.ly/3j4ceok
While we believe there is gross overuse and inappropriate use of psychotropic medications, we are not entirely against appropriate prescribing of medication. Our philosophy can be summarized as “careful medicating when needed.” PCH conducts thorough assessments to determine whether our clients can benefit from appropriate medication, viewing medication as adjunctive to the other treatments we provide. Inappropriate medicating can hinder the process of healing, as well as create new psychological issues and problems. We use medication to enhance the healing process, and as an adjunct to facilitate psychotherapy and participation in other therapeutic activities. Depression is a normal reaction to stressful events and losses in our lives. However, when it manifests in ways that disrupt everyday life and becomes prolonged, it may be time to seek clinical help. Our approach to health care is to make sure our clients are exploring the root of their emotions as well as learning coping mechanisms to carry with them throughout life. We encourage family participation in treatment (as appropriate). We include a three-day family weekend in the first month of programming. Each client’s therapist can schedule sessions with family and significant others as needed to facilitate treatment. Learn more about our program: https://bit.ly/3hJmt0K
