In 1881 the Iittala glass company was established in Iittala, Finland. From the 1940's through the 1960's, Iittala pioneered a new wave of Scandinavian design. This new style deviated from traditional, decorative designs, in favor of functionality and clean, simplified lines. Iittala works closely with an elite team of designers to create their glassware collections. One of those designers, Tim Sarpaneva, worked with the company during the 1950's, and played a large role in developing the company's new contemporary style. Sarpaneva was also the creative mind behind Iittala's iconic logo. The purple bird carafe bears Sarpaneva's signature on the bottom, from which we can discern that this piece was likely produced in the late 1950's. In the early 1960's Sarpaneva began signing pieces with his initials only, by the late 1960's he was not signing them at all, making this piece a rare find.

This table and chairs was made in Gardner, Massachusetts, also known as the Furniture Capital of New England! The town of Gardner was founded in 1785, and by the mid 1800’s it was home to 12 furniture companies who produced an astonishing total of 1.2 million chairs per year! These 12 companies included such famous names as Heywood-Wakefield, Nichols & Stone, S. Bent & Brothers, and Conant Ball, all known for their attention to quality and detail.

The table pictured here was made by S. Bent & Brothers. The company, started in 1867, was lead by Samuel Bent, who got his start in the furniture business by working for Heywood-Wakefield.
