October is National Dental Hygiene Month! Establish good oral hygiene habits for a positive impact on your overall health. This includes brushing and flossing twice daily and getting regular checkups and cleanings! Keep this all in mind when you are eating all that candy later this month π π¬ π« π
Harvey Ball, the man who created the iconic yellow smiley face symbol, designated October 2nd as World Smile Day! The celebratory requirements for this holiday are simple: use the day to smile and spread kindness throughout the globe.

We did our best to design our office like a home because that's how we want it to feel for our patients... a home away from home π β€οΈ
Your body needs specific nutrients to work properly. If you eat poorly, it will have a harder time fighting off infections. Periodontal disease begins as an infection so eating right is an effective way to keep your gums healthy. Load up on more salad and fewer fries next time you eat out! π₯ππ₯¦
Remember our patient, Lou? She became instant friends with our wonderful receptionist, Debby, the first time she came to our office. Now the two of them love seeing each other each time Lou pays us a visit!
"She and I just clicked. Iβm like her mom and we have wonderful visits. Itβs just nothing but a joy coming here!β π
In recognition of National Dental Hygiene month we would like to Thank Our Amazing Dental Hygienists Susan and Brooke. They always go above and beyond for our patients to give the best periodontal treatment to our patients. Thank you both for all that you do!!

Age is a big risk factor for gum disease. According to the CDC, over 70% of Americans 65 and older have periodontitis. If you are reaching your golden years, give us a call to assess your risk for periodontal disease π΄ π΅
As a periodontal office, we are all about healthy gums! That includes the gums already in your mouth, as well as chewing gum. Many of you probably already know that sugar in gum is not ideal for your oral health. But did you know that many sugar-free gums are not good for you either?
The majority of them contain ingredients like aspartame, which is even worse than sugar! When choosing a healthy gum, look for sugar alcohols like xylitol and erythritol. These can actually decrease cavity-causing acid production of oral bacteria.
Some healthy gum brands we recommend are Simply Gum, PUR gum, and Glee gum.

Studies show that stress is linked to many serious conditions, including periodontal disease, because it makes it harder for your body to be able to fight off infection. Take a few deep breaths today and do something to relax. Your health depends on it! π
Today is National Brush Day (the day after Halloween, go figure! π) Make sure you are brushing twice a day for a full two minutes for a complete clean!
"Every procedure has been wonderful, and everybody here is like family."
We absolutely love seeing Lou come through our doors. π She's been a fun patient to have around over the years. She was nice enough to sit down and talk about her experience at Pocatello Periodontics!

Tobacco use may be the number one risk factor contributing to periodontal disease. Smoking is also related to a number of serious health issues such as heart and lung disease or cancer, so quitting is an excellent idea for your overall health. We know this can be a tough habit to break so reach out to your doctor if you need help!
Sore jaw? This can be a sign that you've been clenching or grinding your teeth. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, this habit "can put excess force on the supporting tissues of the teeth and could speed up the rate at which these periodontal tissues are destroyed."
If you notice yourself clenching your teeth throughout the day, take a minute to relax your muscles and breathe. Grinding your teeth at night? Talk to your dentist about ways to help curb this habit!

If your body's inflammatory system is affected by a systemic disease such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or rheumatoid arthritis, this may take a toll on your gums and put you at risk for periodontal disease. This is why it is so important that you discuss your medical history with us at your first appointment so we can properly assess your situation!

While bleeding a little bit while flossing is normal if you don't floss regularly, bleeding while brushing, flossing, or eating hard food could be a sign that there is an underlying problem with your gums. Schedule an appointment with us so we can get to the bottom of things!

Plaque is the sticky film that builds up on the surface of your teeth. If it is not consistently removed through brushing and flossing, plaque hardens to form tartar. Tartar cannot be removed by regular brushing and must be taken care of by a dental professional.
Bacteria live in both plaque and tartar. This bacteria secretes acid that can lead to tooth decay and gum issues. Stay ahead of the game and brush regularly!
Loose or separating teeth may be normal as a child, but as an adult, it is a cause for concern. Specifically, these symptoms can be a sign of periodontal disease. If you are experiencing loose or separating teeth, give our office a call so we can check things out!
