While the actual Minnesota State Fair was cancelled this year due to COVID-19, it didn’t stop Prairie Bluffs from hosting our own. On Thursday, September 3, residents and associates celebrated this time-honored tradition with games, activities, contests, and of course, food. We even had a visit from Cherokee, one of the hoofed heroes from the Minneapolis Mounted Police Unit. It was great fun! 😀🌽🐴🍩

Due to COVID-19, wearing a mask has become the new normal. This is a reminder that face masks are mandatory in all public places and at all programs here at Prairie Bluffs. For a mask to be effective, it must be worn properly. It should fit comfortably over the nose and mouth without slipping. Masks not only ensure your safety but the safety of those around you. Here are other helpful reminders when wearing a face mask:
• Wash your hands before putting on your mask.
• Put it over your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin.
• Don’t put it around your neck, on your chin, or on your forehead.
• Don’t touch the mask; if you do, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer.
• Be sure to follow all social distancing guidelines and remain at least six feet apart.
Taking the necessary safety precautions can help mitigate the virus and keep you safe!

We have two additional members of the Prairie Bluffs family to introduce. Please help us welcome Jennifer Whereatt our new Director of Nursing and Abdi Khalif, our new Nurse Manager.
A native of Duluth, Jennifer started her health care career in 2001 as a Nursing Aide. She relocated to the area in 2010, earned her BS in Nursing, and has spent the last ten years in memory care. Jennifer lives in the Twin Cities with her husband and two daughters. She enjoys spending time with family, cooking, and the outdoors.
Abdi graduated from St. Catherine’s in 2016 with his nursing degree and held several nursing positions since. He’s recently earned his Master’s degree in biomedical science from WMU Home Stryker School of Medicine, dedicating the majority of his time to working with individuals and families coping with autism. When he’s not caring for others, Abdi enjoys working out, basketball, and discussing the latest scientific developments with friends.
Welcome Jennifer and Abdi. We’re so glad you’re here.

Thanksgiving will look a little different this year due to Covid-19, but here are some low-risk activities to help you have a safe and joyful holiday:
• Prepare a traditional family dinner with only people who live in your household
• Host a virtual dinner and share recipes with friends and family
• Shop online rather than in person on the day after Thanksgiving or the next Monday
• Watch sports events, parades, and movies from your apartment
However you spend Thanksgiving, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season. 🦃🦃

Help bring smiles and comfort to local children this season.
Prairie Bluffs Senior Living is pleased to be an official drop-off site for Toys for Tots and Coats for Kids.
Donated toys should be NEW. Popular ideas include books, backpacks, board games, remote control cars or trucks, handheld electronics, and skateboards and helmets or other sporting equipment. Please avoid giving food items or toys that look like realistic weapons.
We are also collecting new or gently used coats and jackets, as well as NEW gloves and winter hats.
Collection boxes for the toys and bins for the coats are set up inside the vestibule at both entrances of our building. Items may be dropped off at Prairie Bluffs any time before December 15.
Toy donations will then be taken to KARE 11, and coats will be delivered to the Salvation Army.
Thank you for your kindness and generosity!

December 1-7 is National Handwashing Awareness Week. Handwashing is one of the most effective ways to combat COVID-19. Healthcare experts recommend washing your hands with soap and clean water for at least 20 seconds. Make sure to create a good lather and wash in between the web of your hands as well as the back and under the nails. Dry hands off using a clean, dry towel. Let’s all do our part to help mitigate the virus.

On February 15, Prairie Bluffs Senior Living celebrated National Singles Awareness Day in savory and safe socializing style!
We enjoyed delicious hors d’oeuvres and sweet treats and spent time among friends while adhering to health and safety regulations, of course.
And we were treated to a little Valentine’s Day history, linking the holiday to Geoffrey Chaucer’s 14th century Parliament of Fowls poem, as well as some fun trivia! Did you know that wedding rings are worn on the left hand’s fourth finger because the ancient Egyptian culture believed the vein of love ran directly from this finger to the heart? 💘💍
Everyone had a good, safe, and entertaining time!

Say hello to Dana, a Lead Home Health Aide at Prairie Bluffs Senior Living!
What does Dana love most about Prairie Bluffs? The residents, because they are like her family. One of Dana’s favorite things to do is draw. She also has played guitar since she was 12 and wants to learn to play the harp.
Dana’s optimism is reflected in her favorite motto: “This, too, shall pass.” If Hollywood ever made a movie about her life, Dana would cast Sarah Paulson in the lead role. And if she could meet anyone, Dana would choose Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, the drummer for Avenged Sevenfold.
