Orthodontics along can only move the teeth so far. Sometimes the problem is in the position or shape of the jaw bones. If the bones are too long or too short or too narrow, the teeth cannot be aligned properly with braces alone.
X-ray technology gives us the ability to see 3 dimensions easier now. In-office CAT scanners are common place now and will eventually be standard of care. Visualization is incredible better and there is little guess work. This gives us a better diagnosis and better treatment across the board.

As time goes on, bone can fuse against the roots of teeth, particularly impacted wisdom teeth. The most common problem we see with these, if exposed, is decay or superficial gum infection. Removing only the crown of a tooth like this is the most effective and least traumatic solution. This is what we call a coronectomy.
Long-term studies have been done that show this to be a less traumatic technique that solves the problem. If one has multiple long-standing impacted wisdom teeth, they don’t all have to be removed. At some point in life, they should be treated as individual teeth. Observation of impacted teeth is perfectly appropriate if there is no pathology read more about coronectomy on our website: https://www.oralsurgeonwichitafalls.com/procedures/coronectomy

Wisdom teeth are our third set of molars. They are the last teeth to come in (16-18 years approximately). They seem to cause the most problems, as removal of many is necessary. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. If one has room for them, you will not need to see an oral surgeon. Expansion of the arches for braces to align existing teeth and decreased jaw size contribute to the lack of space for eruption. They may remain impacted, under the gums and bone. If they finish their growth close to the surface, they will eventually become exposed and frequently cause problems.
This is what teeth in a day/same day teeth/teeth express/all-on-4 (all registered trademarks) looks like. It is a denture on stilts. You have to use a WaterPik daily to clean under it, otherwise we’ll be taking out implants. Implants can have bone loss from periodontal disease. This patient was extremely happy with the result and has been problem free and functioning well for 8 years.
Wishing you a healthy and happy New Year!
We hope you have a wonderful holiday with loved ones! We'll be back Monday!
