It’s Black History Month, and we’re honored to highlight several African American heroes of the Christian faith, both well-known and unsung. Today we recognize William Seymour, pastor of the Azusa Street Mission and catalyst of the Pentecostal movement. Born to emancipated slaves and raised in Louisiana, Seymour was a student of the holiness movement and moved to Los Angeles in 1906 bringing with him a fresh, Spirit-led message. With the launch of the Apostolic Faith Mission at 312 Azusa Street, Seymour’s meetings turned into the Azusa Street Revival, drawing large, racially integrated crowds–defying social norms of the time. The resulting movement became known as Pentecostalism, paving the way for the Assembles of God denomination we are a part of as River Valley Church. We honor William Seymour with gratitude and humility for his contributions to the Church.

t’s Black History Month, and we’re honored to highlight several African American heroes of the Christian faith, both well-known and unsung. Today we honor Amanda Berry Smith, evangelist, singer, missionary, and the founder of an orphanage for African American children. Smith was born into slavery in Maryland in 1837. After her father worked to buy freedom for himself and his family, Smith left home to find work and pursue an education. Even through grave illness and the loss of two husbands and several children, Smith pursued a life of trusting God for provision, sharing the Gospel through preaching and singing. She traveled overseas to preach in Great Britain, India and Liberia. Upon returning to the United States a decade later, Smith founded an orphanage in Illinois to care for and educate African American children. We honor Amanda Berry Smith for her commitment to justice in society, obedience to God’s Great Commission, and her spiritual fervor that inspired and expanded greater opportunities for women in ministry.

On the day of the trial of the officers charged with the death of George Floyd, River Valley Church had the distinct honor of partnering with churches and ministry leaders all across Minnesota in a unified effort to pray for God’s peace and healing in our cities. Tomorrow, March 8 at 12PM, River Valley along with hundreds of other churches across the state are taking time to pray together. Our buildings will be open (excluding City Campus), so we invite you to join us in person or online for a unified time of prayer and intercession for God to move.
