The University of Akron School of Law has conferred a C. Blake McDowell Jr. Professorship on three faculty members: Professors Bernadette Bollas Genetin, Willa E. Gibson, and Joann Marie Sahl. The McDowell Professorships were awarded based on the recommendations of a faculty committee to full-time Akron Law professors who are “exemplar[s] of excellence in at least two of the following areas: teaching, scholarship, and service.”
The McDowell Professorship was established in 1999, funded by an unrestricted bequest from the estate of C. Blake McDowell Jr. McDowell was a long-time partner and leader of the Akron-based law firm Brouse McDowell, which was co-founded by his father in 1918. Thanks to an earlier generous gift from McDowell Sr., the School of Law building, the C. Blake McDowell Law Center, bears the family name.

We are all saddened to learn of the death of longtime Barberton Judge Michael Weigand. He was so good to Judge Lanzinger and me and everyone he worked with or came in front of him. He practiced what I would call "good natured" justice and made his mark on our court in the ways we give chances to people to change their lives. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his wife Carolyn and their daughters Lesley and Amy and their families. We will miss Judge Weigand but his influence on our lives and our court will long survive him.

Every Wednesday afternoon, mom Amy drives out her three kids - Maisen, Makenna, and Jacob to read to the animals. Their kindness and dedication to shelter pets is truly a blessing!
Just having someone read to the animals can help ease their stress and give them some extra human connection.
You can see Brock in the middle here, demonstrating his love of literature (and some ear and belly rubs). Brock is a Lab mix who came right over and plopped down in the middle of the blanket for his turn to hear a book!

👀🧐An Akron landmark is about to experience some changes. The Beacon is reporting that the neon Firestone sign that has overlooked the city for generations is coming down and being converted into an LED sign.
It will then be relocated, most likely to the under construction Advanced Tire Production Center, which is set to open in 2022. This will be Akron's first new tire plant since WW2.

Happy 100th Birthday, Bert! Summit Metro Parks will once again observe “Bert Szabo Day” on December 4 in honor of the park district’s first interpretive naturalist. To help mark this annual occasion, Sand Run Parkway is temporarily renamed “Bert Szabo Parkway” for the month of December.
“Bert is in a league of his own when it comes to his contributions to Summit Metro Parks, both as an employee and as a volunteer,” said Executive Director Lisa King. “The park district wishes him a wonderful 100th birthday as we continue his legacy of dedication to the parks and nature education.”
Szabo began his career with what was then known as the Akron Metropolitan Park District in 1957. Among his many accomplishments at the park district, Szabo helped initiate the Fall Hiking Spree, designed exhibits at the F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm Visitors Center, created the unique portal sign at Deep Lock Quarry Metro Park and was an early contributor to Green Islands newsletter, now a magazine with a circulation of more than 14,000. Following his retirement in 1991, Szabo has become one of the park district’s most committed volunteers, contributing more than 7,000 service hours to date.

The Akron Zoo will be closed on Jan. 1 for New Year's Day.
When the zoo reopens on Jan. 2, our indoor buildings will be open daily! Visit the lemurs, Komodo dragon, Galapagos tortoises, bats and more. They've missed you and can't wait to see you! Plus, our Komodo Kingdom Café will reopen on Jan. 2.
Other park changes beginning on Jan. 2 - the train will close for the season and will reopen in April. The carousel will be open, weather permitting.
Tickets must be purchased online. No tickets will be available at the door. To avoid overcrowding, tickets are available via time ticketing. The time selected for your tickets is the time you must enter the park. Even Akron Zoo members must have tickets to enter the park. Operations Santa’s Sleigh lit up Akron Children’s last night as dozens of local law enforcement vehicles paraded around the hospital. Patients and families could wave and watch the “goodnight lights” from their windows while officers drove by flashing lights and blaring sirens.

Shilah update: The male coyote is doing well as he recovers from a broken leg. Shilah broke his humerus in the upper part of his leg on Thanksgiving Day 2020 when he accidentally collided with his sister, Kaliska. Shilah underwent emergency surgery that day and our vet team reconstructed his leg with pins, screws and rods.

When the Seiberlings founded The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in 1898, the rubber industry was already well established and existing companies heavily guarded their tire manufacturing processes. To survive, Goodyear would need to break the mold. Literally.
By inventing and patenting items such as the straight side tire with its accompanying universal rim, the Seiberling-State Tire Building Machine, and the Pneumatic truck tire, breaking the mold is exactly what happened. In 1916, Goodyear became the world's largest tire company.

We will hand out staffs to those who have already submitted a form on February 14 from 10 a.m. to noon outside at F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm (Akron). How to experience this in your Oculus VR headset:
1. Save this post (Add this to your “Saved Items”)
2. Save it on a list
3. Put on your Oculus Quest 2 / Quest 1 VR headset. On the left side of your Oculus homepage menu, click on “Saved”
4. You should be able to see your saved Mars 360 photo
5. Click on “Watch” and it will open an Oculus Browser
6. The 360 photo will load
7. On the top left corner of the photo, you will see the “Enter VR” button
8. Click “Enter VR” and it will go into a full immersive view of the Mars 360 photo
Alternatively, you can copy the Facebook post’s URL and open your Oculus Browser on your Quest 1 or Quest 2 VR headset, and view it directly.
I hope you can enjoy this unique experience in immersive virtual reality!

Happy Birthday, Louis Stokes! Born February 23, 1925, Stokes played a groundbreaking role in the legal and political life of the nation serving 15 consecutive terms (30 years) as congressman. During his tenure he was the chair of the House Select Committee on Assassinations, and a pivotal figure in the Black Democratic Caucus.

Rocky River Reservation’s pair of Peregrine Falcons are frequenting the Hilliard Road bridge, and recently have been joined by a rival female falcon. Competition for a mate and prime nesting sites can be fierce and aerial battles can be dramatic. The resident Rocky River pair, nicknamed “GG” and “Gusto” have increased pair-bonding and stepped up patrolling their territory as nesting season quickly approaches. More updates soon.
