Lots of fun sharing the Upsolve story with a hometown Chicago audience this morning! When corporations on Wall Street file bankruptcy, we often view it as a “strategic move” to protect themselves against market downturns. But when individuals file, we think of it as a “moral failing.” This double standard is wrong and hurts millions of low-income and working-class families. 90% of bankruptcies are tied to sudden financial shocks from medical bills, layoffs, and family breakups — all things beyond our control.
In Nov. 2019, our whole team had the chance to visit the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, AL. To prepare for the trip, I read everything I could about EJI founder Bryan Stevenson. He’s a modern day super hero and has inspired our whole team ever since that trip. When TIME asked me to film a tribute to someone who inspires me, I knew who I wanted to do right away. We’re all so lucky to have him in this world as a role model, teacher, and leader in the fight for a better version of the American experiment.
At Upsolve, we are proud to be among the many nonprofits advocating for economic justice and legal reform for our communities. Thank you for helping us continue our mission #GivingTuesday
