Get geared up for our summer camps at Wake Forest School of Rock. One of the themes we have is a Songwriting and Recording workshop!
Through this special 5-day songwriting camp, students will learn how to write their own songs! Students will analyze some of the greatest compositions of the last 60 years in order to develop their own tunes. They will learn about chord progressions, arrangements and other tricks of the trade. We’ll spend Monday through Friday learning and writing songs, all culminating in a live performance. Great for students 7-18 years old who have had previous instruction.

Bennie really liked playing the bass drum in marching band, but since the COVID pandemic curtailed his marching band activities a lot, he wanted to find something he would like playing when he had some alone time, which seem to be more and more lately. Since he was big fan of Motown & rhythm and blues, he decided to take up the bass. It was great for him to be able to play along with the songs he liked listening to, and it gave him a chance to just be alone with his music.

Through music we build future leaders
During rehearsals at School of Rock, the show director decided to pick students to be a song captain for each song. Max was a little scared of having to be in charge of anything, especially with some of the new kids he didn't know. But he quickly learned that if he was prepared on his songs, the other kids would respond to that and follow his lead. He was the drummer after all, and everyone likes following a steady beat!

Davy was always an 'old soul' when it came to music, preferring music from the 60s and 70s to much of the music being produced today. One of his mom's favorite bands was the Rolling Stones. He was really excited when his School of Rock decided to do a Rolling Stones show and he got assigned drums on It's Only Rock n' Roll.

Through music we teach patience
Sally found that in learning new material, she would be able to learn certain songs quickly, and some would take her awhile. When she started working on her songs for her Performance Group, she found that some of the other kids were having the same problem. Some songs came together quickly and others took some work. Since she figured out others were having the same challenges, it allowed her to be a little more patient with others, because in the end, everything came together for her show.

You Can't Quarantine Creativity
Evan started feeling a little down about not being able to hang with his friends. They would always hang out and listen to music together and try to create some beats. Evan grabbed his mom's old electronic keyboard and started working on some basic rhythms. He decided to start taking remote key lessons at School of Rock so that he could get better and he was able to bounce ideas off his instructor. It was a great way to become a little more creative and create beats that made more sense musically.

Denny was definitely a metalhead and loved going to see live shows. They inspired him to get better as a drummer. While he understood it was important for him to work on his rudiments during practice time, he really enjoyed being able to play along with his band mates during his School of Rock rehearsals. He learned so much by being on stage, especially how the drummer tends to be the driver of the band. He could never get that by just taking lessons.

Ella had taken vocals lessons when she was in grade school, but it never really stuck. Practicing scales and technique was kind of boring to her and she never really worked on songs that she liked. When her mom enrolled her in School of Rock, that all changed. Because she was working on music she enjoyed, she understood that working on her technique would make her a better performer because it would enable her to sing well through a wider vocal range. She could tell it made a difference.

Dave was always a bit of a loner in grade school, preferring to hang out in his room listening to music and playing playing along with his bass. He was excited when he was able to join School of Rock last winter because the kids there understood him and many were very much like him.
