Large patch is a fungal disease that affects lawns throughout the Southeast. It attacks all warm-season turfgrasses but is especially problematic in St. Augustinegrass and zoysiagrass.
The best way to treat large patch is also the best way to prevent it: make sure that your lawn care is appropriate for the season and your local climate. Learn more on Gardening Solutions: https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/lawns/problems-and-solutions/large-patch.html

It is with a heavy heart that we share that Tom Russell, former Superintendent of Volusia County Schools, has passed away. Mr. Russell was with VCS for 28 years. During that time, he had many different roles – he was a teacher, an Assistant Principal, a Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent. He was a kind and compassionate educator, leader, and friend. He will be greatly missed here in Volusia County, as well as in Flagler County where he was Principal of Flagler Palm Coast High School. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife, Julie, his children, and grandchildren, as well as the many colleagues and friends who worked with him over the years. Please keep the Russell family in your thoughts in the coming days.

More people are growing their own vegetables to save money and to eat healthier. Now is a great time to start planning your spring garden. Raised beds are great alternative to planting in the ground. Raised beds decrease the work on your joints and can overcome poor soil. You can select the soil that is better for growing vegetables as opposed to amending yard soil that may be too wet or compacted. Raised beds should be located on level ground and in a spot that gets 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.💙
For more information about how to build or select a raised bed, see the attached link.

Florida Friendly Landscaping (FFL) Principle – Attract Wildlife
Whether your home is in the city, suburbs, or in a rural location, you can try a few simple steps to sustain wildlife in your surroundings:
1. Provide food for wildlife by planting native plants and plants which pollinators, birds and wildlife are attracted to
2. Provide a water source such as a puddler for butterflies, pond, water feature
3. Provide nesting material for birds – you don’t have to clean up all your yard waste, the birds will love you for it
4. Manage your pets especially cats which kill many birds
5. Use insecticides only when needed
6. Leave areas of your yarn unmowed for wildlife shelter
7. Plant a diversity of plants – diverse in height and type to provide shelter and feeding opportunities for a diversity of wildlife
💙
Try one or a few of these tips and over time you will reap the rewards with wildlife visitors to your home!

Native plants can be a great addition to your garden. They have many advantages over plants that have been introduced into our state. A native plant is generally one that has lived in an area for an extended period of time. Some definitions state that they existed before European contact with our country. Some advantages are that they tend to be more drought tolerant, once established; less bothered by pests; offer a food source to wildlife and may require less care. They can also be a good substitute for plants that have been determined to be invasive. Even with native plants, it is important to plant the right plant in the right place for it to thrive. Native plants may be a bit harder to find, but they have gaining in popularity over the past 20-30 years. ❣ Learn more:
