It is National Do Something Nice Day! ❤️
Today -- put a little energy into doing something nice and considerate for someone else. The smallest act of kindness can cause the largest change in someone's day.
Continuing with our theme of CELEBRATING National Assisted Living week for TWO weeks:
We would like to extend a big THANK YOU to Sue and Paula for all they do to support our staff and our tenants at Roitenberg Family Assisted Living.
They truly are two of the Stars of Sholom! 🌟🌟
Last Friday our Housing Director, Paula and Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, Ben delivered DQ treats to all of our residents with a Thank you note. We also asked them to take this time to thank their staff. We know we are dragging this “week” out but what a wonderful excuse it is to celebrate and honor both staff and residents and bring some treats and smiles to our entire Sholom family!
Thanks to an anonymous donor Sholom’s staff at our various locations were treated with farmer’s market goodness! If the staff weren’t able to attend, shopping bags were packed and delivered to them! Staff had a great time trading the healthy fruits and vegetables. Community support for our wonderful healthcare workers which is much appreciated!
Jeanne is really settling in well in her new apartment home at Roitenberg and loves the view of the fall colors out her window. 🍁
Recently our Leasing Coordinator visited to see how she is doing. They had a great discussion on the differences between knitting and crocheting and why Jeanne actually prefers crocheting.
The staff has learned so much from our extra 1:1 visits and time spent with our tenants. What a joy it is to serve! 🥰

Meet our wonderful resident, Marty L!
Marty, who is near being a Centenarian, is St. Louis Park’s OLDEST VOTER! How cool is that??
Mr. Marty has 3 sons, 7 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren, all of voting age! He is a former election judge in Minnesota, former restaurateur, and stock market broker.
Our team at Sholom are ELATED to assist our residents in casting their vote! To our Veterans: Today, and every day, we thank and honor you. Your dedication to this great nation will ALWAYS be appreciated. 🇺🇸
In an effort, to thank our neighbors, community, and the families of our Roitenberg Assisted living and Memory care tenants, Sholom hosted a Drive thru event.
We gave away Matzo ball soup, pumpkin pie, and goodie bags as folks stayed socially distanced and safe from their car waving at the residents and staff.
There was a Scarecrow contest and those who drove by could vote on their favorite Scarecrow. The Scarecrows were decorated by our student volunteers from Transition Plus Programs, our staff, and our residents. Each Scarecrow represented one of our lines of business and was a great chance for everyone to learn about all of the wonderful services that Sholom provides in our community.
The event was advertised as “rain or shine” and in true Minnesota fashion, it snowed. .. But that did not stop our staff, residents, and participants from making the most of a chance to connect with one another and to have FUN. There was music and dancing and plenty of fun had by all.
Thank you to all who participated!
On this day in 1775, the United States Marine Corps was established.
A HUGE thank you to our United States Marines, past, present, and future! 🇺🇸

For anyone dealing with an illness, grief, or the loss of a loved one, the holidays can be a time of sadness, pain, anger, or dread. It can be difficult to cope, especially when you see the sights and sounds of holiday happiness all around you. Grief can become overwhelming with waves of memories, particularly during Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Grief can also magnify the stress that is often already a part of the holidays. How can you begin to fill the emptiness you feel when it seems that everyone else is overflowing with joy? There are a few strategies, from the Harvard Mental Health Letter, that you can employ to help you get through this time.

On this day in 1936, the Army National Guard was established.
From NationalGuard.mil –
“in 1636, the first militia regiments in North America were organized in Massachusetts. Based upon an order of the Massachusetts Bay Colony's General Court, the colony's militia was organized into three permanent regiments to better defend the colony. Today, the descendants of these first regiments - the 181st Infantry, the 182nd Infantry, the 101st Field Artillery, and the 101st Engineer Battalion of the Massachusetts Army National Guard – share the distinction of being the oldest units in the U.S. military. December 13, 1636, thus marks the beginning of the organized militia, and the birth of the National Guard's oldest organized units is symbolic of the founding of all the state, territory, and District of Columbia militias that collectively make up today's National Guard.”

Do you know how Sholom was founded?! Check this out!
Sholom’s roots started with the Daughters of Abraham, a group of dedicated Jewish women who, in the early 1900s, purchased the Banning homestead at 75 Wilkins Street. This was to be known as the Jewish Home for the Aged of St. Paul. It served 20 persons, admitting men over age 65 and women over 60.

We are so grateful to ALL of our staff who come to work every day and provide care and smiles for our residents. They wear all the PPE daily without complaint and bring so much JOY that we wanted to make them smile and giggle too.
This past week as they came to work and checked in at the temping station, we had them take photos with our Snow Person (also sporting some PPE) - and they didn’t even have to socially distance with this cardboard fun one! They were able to give hugs and smiles and share a laugh or two!
Here are some of the fun photos we have taken so far – we plan to keep bringing the FUN and showing our appreciation as best we can!

In our efforts to continue to stay connected, even if only virtually, Sholom has partnered with Sarah Routman, of Laugh Healthy , to bring some safe and fun events to our community. During our first attempt at Bingo via Zoom we found some technology glitches, but we did not give up: we soldiered on and found that our audience of older adults and prospective residents wanted to learn. So we tried it again a different way. This time we had some back up plans and we set ourselves up for success – and it was just that – a wonderful success! We had so much fun!
(in honor of Throwback Tuesday): Here is a recap and a photo of the smiling crew who participated on Presidents Day, 2/15, playing Presidential Trivia Bingo and Getting Giddy With it! There were prizes for all and many laughs were shared all around. Keep watching for the invite to our April virtual event. We will continue to bring laughter and hope and learn together as we get through this together with a little help (and some laughs) from our friends!
