More Americans have died of COVID-19 in the past year alone than died of the flu in the last seven years combined.
While influenza causes many deaths each year and should be taken very seriously, the misconception that COVID-19 is no more serious than the flu is dangerous. We must protect one another from all illnesses, including COVID-19, which has now claimed 289,373 lives in the U.S. as of December 10, 2020.

Health experts predict that throughout the holiday season, many communities will see an additional increase in COVID-19 cases. If you think you may have COVID-19 or have been exposed to it, you should get tested as soon as possible and immediately begin self-isolating.
If you receive a positive result for COVID-19, you should stay home — except to get medical care — and isolate from other members of your household to the extent possible. (Learn more about controlling the household spread of COVID-19 at https://bit.ly/2JjynTs.) Continue to monitor your symptoms and seek care if your condition worsens — calling ahead first, if possible.
If you are tested too soon after your exposure, infection may not be revealed in the initial test. This is why even if you test negative that it is imperative that you continue to monitor your symptoms for at least 10 days and take preventive actions, such as staying home as much as possible and wearing a mask any time you are around others.

Maury Regional Health administered the first COVID-19 vaccines to frontline health care workers today, just hours after receiving the shipment. Among the first to receive the vaccine are physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and emergency medical services personnel.
The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is a two-dose regimen with the second dose administered 21 days following the initial dose. The organization received an allotment to vaccinate more than 1,000 providers and anticipates the second doses for administration to arrive in approximately three weeks.
Because vaccine supplies are limited, the CDC recommends that initial vaccine be allocated to health care personnel and long-term care facility residents. As vaccine availability increases, vaccination recommendations will expand to include more groups.

Maury Regional Health CEO Alan Watson, Chief Medical Officer Martin Chaney, M.D., and Infectious Disease Specialist Deborah Goldsmith, M.D., serve as champions for COVID-19 vaccination and have now joined the ranks of our health care family who have been vaccinated.
"We trust the vaccine and the science behind it. We believe that this vaccine will begin to turn the tide of the pandemic and allow us to return to normalcy within our society. In the meantime, we ask that you continue to mask and social distance in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19," said Watson.
A risk assessment tool developed by Georgia Tech estimates the chance that at least one COVID-19-positive individual will be present at a gathering, based on the event size. Assess the risk for a gathering where you live or work at https://covid19risk.biosci.gatech.edu.
Active cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in our region. As of 12/22, there were 2,931 active cases in Maury Regional Health's six-county service area of Maury, Giles, Lewis, Lawrence, Marshall and Wayne counties. This represents an increase of 449 cases over just a five-day period.
PROTECT THOSE YOU LOVE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.
Health experts tell us that the risk of spreading COVID-19 increases in gatherings that bring together different households. According to the CDC, you are more likely to get or spread COVID-19 when you are in close contact with others for a total of 15 minutes or more. Remember that people without symptoms or with a recent negative test result can still spread COVID-19 to others. Learn more at https://bit.ly/2WEFfhh

My trip to Maury regional medical center (3rd floor specifically)
Picture it, me a healthy man in my ((clears throat)) mid 30s on his death bed (litterally). The stubborn man that I am took everything inside me to swallow my pride, get in my trusty lil Nissan and drive my sorry ass to get help.
Upon arrival, it took almost 2 hours to get admitted to the Emergency room. Once in, they assessed my situation and realized the severity of the situation. This is when I realized this was not a "take 2 of these and call me in the morning" type of deal.
Fluids pumping and being assessed I end up on the 3rd floor. Now this floor is populated by the young and old, covid and non covid. But, the most…

Have you received your COVID-19 vaccine? If so, you may be excited to share the news on social media with your friends and family. But before you take that selfie, the Better Business Bureau warns that sharing a photo featuring your officially issued vaccination card — which includes your full name, date of birth and where you received your vaccine — may leave you vulnerable to scammers and identify theft.
Consider sharing the news with your friends and family by using safer alternatives like a Facebook profile frame or by flexing your arm in a selfie taken after the fact. (You can also now access Maury Regional Health's "I Got My COVID-19 Vaccine" profile frame by searching "Maury Regional" when adding a frame to your profile photo.)
And, speaking of your vaccine card, remember to put your official card (like the one pictured here) in a safe place and be sure to bring it with you to your second dose appointment. The card contains important information about the vaccine you received (including the date and location of vaccination and the manufacturer), which will make it possible for you to receive your second dose and to keep a record that you have been vaccinated.

Congratulations to Maury Regional Medical Center Critical Care Unit nurse Daniel Patterson, BSN, RN, on receiving the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for the month of February.
In the submitted nomination form, Patterson's nominator shared how they "had never seen a team more devoted to their patients" — including all the staff they encountered in the Critical Care Unit but especially Patterson. According to the nominator, Patterson helped to break down all the medical jargon into layman's terms and delivered information in a way that was both kind and professional while also consistently helping to bridge communication between the patient and their loved ones.
Nurses are nominated for the DAISY Award by anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary care provided by a nurse. Learn more about the DAISY Award or nominate a Maury Regional Medical Center who has made a difference in your life at MauryRegional.com/DAISY-Award.
