Dr. Rudner has a strong interest in biomechanics, the study of the human musculoskeletal system from a physics/mechanical engineering perspective. He has worked on several research projects with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), including testing the treadmill harness on the NASA KC-135 “Vomit Comet". Dr. Rudner’s senior thesis project as an undergraduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, which was funded by NASA, was to re-design a harness system for running on a treadmill in microgravity. Dr. Rudner tested the treadmill harness on the NASA KC-135 “Vomit Comet” microgravity simulator aircraft. During medical school, Dr. Rudner spent a year doing research in the Exercise Lab at the NASA Johnson Space Center working on the design of the Advanced Resistance Exercise Device (ARED), the resistance exercise machine that now flies on the International Space Station (ISS). Dr. Rudner applies the same physics and engineering principles he used when working with NASA to his understanding of the complex mechanics of the foot and ankle.
