October is National Financial Planning month. Financial planning is different from simply investing- it looks at everyone's situation personally. For instance, does it make sense to pay off your home versus directing those funds into a retirement plan? Should you use your cash reserve to buy a car or finance it? What would happen if you were laid off?
These types of decisions have a much greater impact on your ability to achieve financial independence than your market return. No one can predict or guarantee the market - but we can plan for various scenarios.
In these types of economic uncertainty, planning is more important than ever.

October 16th is Boss’s Day.
Early in my working life, I had far more bad bosses than good bosses. Whether it was the fake French chef who was actually from Brooklyn and used Cream of Mushroom sauce regularly or the handsy one that I slapped before walking out or my then boss's boss who never gave out a compliment- I learned a lot from them. My biggest learning -- be my own boss.

How are you celebrating your holidays this year due to COVID? Our family is keeping our celebration to 7 family members total.
I am hopeful that next year we will have a full house again!
How will you give back this holiday season?
One of the benefits in working from home is having that I get to visit my husband "at work." A week or so ago, we shared some coffee between meetings and classes.
As you may know, my son is in his senior year of high school. While it's clearly been an odd year for him, navigating the college application process has been interesting. There are no college visits.
Last week he had his first interview- a zoom call. I was proud that he dressed up- and not just waist up!
With a new puppy, we were concerned about putting up a Christmas tree. Everything in sight seems to end up in his mouth. We've already had a trip to vet to remove a plastic bag that held sausage- he swiped it off the counter.
There was no way I wasn't going to have a tree.
So after much debate, we elected to do a tree, no ornaments. Then I had a conversation with my friend who also has a lab who is about 1 1/2 years old. She shared how her dog knocked the tree down and pulled the skirt into their pool. Their tree was going onto the courtyard.
It sounded like a great idea! In fact, we may just let the Amazon boxes stay under it and save us on wrapping!
The first picture is right before Jake started to nibble on the branches. The second picture is our tree in the courtyard, outside!
My favorite picture from Thanksgiving- Jake, our puppy, sitting vigilantly in front of the oven while the turkey roasted. He sat there for at least 20 minutes straight.

My son turned 18 this year. One of the first things I helped him do was set up a Roth IRA. He funded it but the funds have been sitting in cash because we've both been busy and keep forgetting about it. Last night, I showed him how to trade in his online account and watched him buy his first stock.
We reviewed 5 different stocks and I explained how I analyzed securities. He selected which one to purchase and he completed the trade himself through our online brokerage.
It was fun to watch.

There has been a lot of discussion on how the quarantine is impacting young people. In my personal experience, the impact that it is having on older people is far greater.
Whether it's been the complete disregard they feel, the stress of having to learn technology that they haven't had to use (for meetings, scheduling vaccinations, seeing family, ordering food and groceries, etc.) or the isolation, it's weighing on them.
As you age, you can begin to have a greater understanding of how finite our time on Earth is. There are no workmates or classmates with whom to share your frustration. Often there are no spouses.
Please reach out to family members or neighbors. Offer to help them schedule vaccinations or show them phone applications to order take out or groceries. Have an outdoor coffee date (well, not those of you in the arctic freeze). Or simply call.
We are all stressed and burdened by the longevity of the pandemic. For me, helping others, helps me to refocus on what's important.
This weekend, take a moment to reach out.

I started my week early to tune into Ameriprise's panel for International Women's Day.
It's been a fantastic, global discussion emphasizing how the pandemic has impacted all our lives, both professionally and personally.
My biggest take away is the diversity within the panel. So often companies lump women into one group- as if we all have the same goals, same styles, etc. Some women have children, some are married, some are quiet, some are assertive-- we all have unique goals and objectives.
I'm grateful to be affiliated with a firm that recognizes this.

The Top Money Moves To Make for Each Generation
For the past 2 1/2 years, Ann Germain has worked as our Client Concierge- answering calls, scheduling appointments and handling our office management. This week is sadly her last week but we are happy for her and grateful that she stayed longer than she had planned.
Ann played a significant role in transitioning our practice to a new client management system, reorganizing our electronic filing system and implementing a client service to model to track and monitor our outreach to clients. During the pandemic, the systems she helped put into place allowed us to work remotely keeping our team and clients safe. She spent much of the pandemic working alone in the office to continue to hold down the fort. She graciously has stayed on to train Miranda Kennedy, our new full-time Business Development Specialist who will be assuming many of Ann's duties... more on that next week.
We genuinely will miss Ann. She was not only fantastic at her job, she was fun and made coming to work enjoyable.

We're back.... almost.
This week we are transitioning back to the office. We've made some updates and are enjoying being back.
We do anticipate that we will continue to hold most meetings virtually, however, we know for some of you this has been difficult and we look forward to seeing you.
Please note that masks are still required per the state mandate and our building management.
Also, it's important to disclose- the candy dish of Dove chocolates has been put on hold for the time being. I realize it's why many clients come to appointments and I don't want any to be disappointed!
