So, I’m not friends with Petula Dvorak, but she wrote this article for the Washington Post about what this pandemic is doing to us... including teeth.
In my almost 21 year career as a dentist, I have NEVER seen the amount of breakage in teeth as I have since March. Never even close. And, also surprisingly, given the community in which we live, where people go the dentist regularly, are highly educated and have dental access to care, have I seen the extensive amount of decay in kids and adults. I’ve never referred out more for root canals or extractions.
This pandemic has not only affected our collective mental status, but our financial, social and dental/medical status.
If you haven’t seen your dentist, wherever you are in the world, please do so. If you have anything going on in your mouth, there’s no better time to address it, as it will only potentially get worse, potentially painful and more costly. (A filling is way less invasive than a root canal and a crown!)

When I moved to DC for dental school over 25 years ago, I never thought I would stay. I assumed I would finish, and like many current Washingtonians, “do my time” and move on. But here I still am. I finished dental school, did my residency in the now defunct DC General Hospital, joined and left private practices, married, had kids, opened a startup business and became one with my community. My Capitol Hill community, in which I have now lived for 20 years, has supported my solo #DrMom venture from the moment I announced that I was opening.
Grateful for the opportunities I have had ever since I arrived in DC, from being a student at an #HBCU , to being a mom to these two… my own #NativeWashingtonians .

I'm still stuck on "the Capitol perimeter". This is our neighborhood. My kids and their friends have grown up in the shadow of our nation's symbol. The Peoples' House. To see a move like this hurt them, also hurts me. So many thoughts and feelings about what's being imposed upon us as DC residents, and now it comes to a head. We need a voice, and have needed a voice, as a city with more residents than two US States.
"More than 700,000 people live in DC now, more than both Wyoming and Vermont. DC has more people in it now than any state had at its date of admission except Oklahoma. The only way to see DC as “too small” is if you think representation should be based on land mass, not people".

Tooth positioning, airway issues such as sleep apnea or bad body position can cause tooth wear, which is potentially devastating. As always, look for the cause and address that, vs a quick fix.

Being a small town girl, Washington, DC never felt too big or unmanageable. My neighborhood is historic, and in many ways, an urban version of my Midwestern hometown. It’s close-knit, and yes, everyone still knows what you are up to. (Good? Bad? Ugly? No secrets. )
Recently, the adjacent Navy Yard neighborhood has experienced a huge surge of all things cool- restaurants, small businesses, residents... oh and a 2019 World Series Championship team.
