✨Assume the Best✨
• Step 1: Make a conscious effort to notice and appreciate when things are going well, even the small stuff. What reasons do you have to be optimistic?
• Step 2: Next time you find yourself assuming the worst, pause and ask, "What evidence do I have to support this?" More often than not, this can break the spell of negative thinking.
How it Helps - We are wired to default to negative thinking--allowing worry, doubt, and suspicion to get the best of us. However, actively looking for the positive is proven to reverse the tendency, bringing more happiness and contentment into our lives. #SCHWellnessWednesday
We are excited to announce that Ashley Skelton, a respiratory therapist in the St. Catherine Hospital Pulmonary Department, has been named Centura Kansas Associate of the Month for September.
Ashley, who grew up in Garden City, always brings a smile and a personal touch to her skilled, compassionate patient care, and the love for her job shines through to her patients and fellow associates. Her calm demeanor always reassures everyone that everything is going to be alright.
When she’s not taking the very best care of our patients, she might be found enjoying the outdoors with her family – her husband, Justin, and their children, Levi and Kendall.
Congratulations, Ashley!
Our Heart Center is excited to have Jennifer Payne, DNP, APRN, NP-C, joining our staff as a cardiology nurse practitioner. But Jennifer is already a familiar face, having worked in our Intensive Care Unit for the past six years.
Jennifer, who says she’s on a mission “to provide the most competent, compassionate care in southwest Kansas,” recently completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Fort Hays State University and is excited to be a part of the skilled, compassionate Heart Center team.
Our team at the Heart Center specializes in evaluation and management of cardiac disorders, including but not limited to hypertension, cardiovascular disease, valvular heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias and coronary artery disease.
Jennifer enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters and is particularly fond of gardening, hiking and camping.
She is currently taking new patients and referrals. To schedule an appointment, call the Heart Center at 620-272-2431.

When you are diagnosed with breast cancer, where do you turn?
If you’re like most, it’s a combination of your provider, support and advocacy groups, friends and family, and even Google! Rarely, do newly diagnosed, in-treatment, or post-treatment patients have a forum with medical practitioners and professional support companies. And even more rarely do providers have the opportunity to have candid conversations with patients.
EMPOWER aims to allow the unanswered, confusing, scary, and practical questions to be posed by patients and providers alike and to capture the dialogue in a virtual and enduring format so that hundreds of other patients and providers can benefit.
In addition to the ‘Patient and Provider’ session, we will be hosting special sessions on support services, survivorship, and medical distancing designed to provide patients and survivors with tools necessary to make strong decisions.
Join us in our pursuit to give patients and providers a clearer communication strategy, to EMPOWER them to be bold and brave in both talking and listening to each other.

▫️▫️Practice Active Listening▫️▫️
In conversation, we tend to not really hear what the other person is saying because we're too busy thinking about what we’re going to say next or forming our own opinions. Authentic listening is a skill you can build with practice. The goal is not to find a solve, but simply to understand the other person's perspective.
1. Minimize Distractions: Put away devices, minimize noise, and allot sufficient time.
2. Hold Clear Intention: The other person will know immediately whether your intention is to "make them feel heard" versus "get the conversation over with."
3. Let Them Talk: Your goal is to let them say what they need to say. Resist the urge to comment or pull the conversation to you. Acknowledge that you are listening ("mm-hmm, I see") and express empathetic words ("wow, how hard, that’s tough").
4. Confirm: When they pause, reflect back specific things they said to confirm understanding ("So, you've noticed A, B, C; sounds like you're worried").
5. Apply The Rule of Three: The first thing someone says is almost never what matters. Invite them to say more. Give them at least three opportunities to get to what matters. Then summarize what you've heard.
HOW IT HELPS - Active listening is a key skill to building a foundation of trust, empathy, and open communication. In our action-driven, distraction-prone world, this practice is extremely rare, but studies show that it allows us to feel safer expressing ourselves and even performing better at work.
This method was developed by researcher Wendy D. Lynch, Ph.D. and psychologist, Dr. Clydette de Groot.

One day last week, during National Rehabilitation Awareness Week, our St. Catherine Hospital rehab team members got into the spirit by dressing up as super heroes. They shouldn’t need costumes, though, to feel like super heroes. They are heroic every day through the way they positively impact the lives of patients and recognize that every person deserves to live his or her life to the fullest.
We want to thank our talented team of physical therapists for the incredible work they do and the compassion they show in caring for our patients.

🛠Repair Mistakes🛠
1. Acknowledge the Mistake: Take accountability for your reaction.
2. Listen: Give the other person the opportunity to share how they were feeling.
3. Move Forward: Synthesize both of your feelings into a plan for the next time you come across a similar situation.
How it Helps - By being transparent about your mistakes instead of brushing them under the rug, you can make a productive plan to improve and move forward. #SCHWellnessWednesday

✨Self-Compassion Break✨
Challenging times can trigger self-critical thoughts. For example, you think you need to snap out of your negative feelings and be efficient and productive—and when you inevitably can’t, you start berating yourself.
A powerful and simple way to soothe yourself is to take a self-compassion break. Created by renowned self-compassion researcher Kristin Neff, Ph.D., this practice touches on the three elements of self-compassion: mindfulness, common humanity, and self-kindness.
Here’s how to do it:
•Acknowledge how you’re feeling by saying: “This is a moment of suffering” (or “This hurts,” “I’m having a really hard time,” or whatever resonates and feels most natural to you).
•Acknowledge that you’re absolutely not alone by saying: “Suffering is a part of life” (or “Other people are struggling, too”).
•Put your hands over your heart and say something kind or caring, such as: “May I give myself the compassion that I need.” #SCHWellnessWednesday

While initial studies indicate the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are approximately 95% effective at preventing recipients from getting sick with COVID-19, it is not yet clear whether those who have been vaccinated can still be asymptomatic spreaders of the virus. For this reason, we strongly recommend everyone – including people who have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine – continue to practice safe behaviors such as wearing a face mask, practicing social distancing, washing your hands frequently, and staying home when sick.

Centura Health proudly welcomes Jeff Carrier as CEO of St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City and Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses. Today was Jeff's first day, and we couldn't be more excited. Jeff will cultivate strong, trusting relationships between our hospitals and communities, connecting our caregivers, providers and volunteers to impact the health and wholeness of every life, every neighbor and every community we serve in southwest Kansas. Welcome, Jeff!
On behalf of St. Catherine Hospital, Siena Medical and Dodge City Medical Center, we are excited to welcome Dr. Chloe Bennett, AuD, FAAA, as a new audiologist for our communities. A native of Finney County, Dr. Bennett is thrilled to return home and serve southwest Kansas.
“I am committed to helping patients across the lifespan improve their communication and overcome barriers,” says Dr. Bennett, who specializes in diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology. “By building meaningful relationships, I am able to use a patient-centered approach to treatment. I work with patients and families to help them reconnect with the things that matter most. I believe in treating my patients with dignity and respect.”
Dr. Bennett will be using the new Verifit machine to treat patients. It is especially critical in hearing aid fittings of children, patients with special needs, and those with surgical ears.
“The Verifit machine gives us the ability to use best practices, have the newest technology, and allows us to appropriately fit our patients with hearing aids,” Dr. Bennett says. “More specifically, it gives the children of southwest Kansas access to the best hearing aid care. We are so thankful for the support from the Foundation and believe this will be a great asset to our community.”
In her free time, Dr. Bennett enjoys traveling, remodeling houses with her husband, and spending time with family, golfing, and her two dogs.

We're working day and night to get the vaccine to as many of you as possible and as quickly as possible in accordance with state guidelines for vaccine distribution. While this process plays out, it's essential that all of us continue to do the things we know stop the spread of this deadly virus: wear a face mask, social distance, practice good hand hygiene, and stay home when sick.
Thank you, Rocky Mountain PBS, for the story.

“Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a time to learn from our past and from each other to better understand the racial justice movement. At Centura Health, our Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance also marks the launch of ongoing efforts that will continue far into the future, designed to effect change in the very structures and systems within which we live and work.
“Indeed, our commitment to social justice lies in our Mission, our core Values, and our Adventist and Catholic founders, who teach us that all people are made in the image of God and so possess an equal and inalienable worth. We ask that you join us today in the power of prayer and reflection as we re-commit ourselves to stand with all those dedicated to meaningful change in our communities, our states and our nation.”

Dr. Stephen Cobb: "It's very important to get that second dose, and the reason why is you want to have all the benefit this vaccine provides." For the COVID-19 vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer, that benefit can equate to 95% effectiveness - but only after the second dose has been administered. Learn more at https://www.centura.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine-information.
Fill out our new Vaccine Notification Sign-Up form to receive additional information and instructions about the COVID-19 vaccine through email and/or text messaging: https://www.centura.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine-information
Please note that you are not required to complete the form in order to receive the vaccine.

We're myth-busting with Dr. Stephen Cobb this morning. If you've heard either of these two myths about the COVID-19 vaccine, please spend less than 60 seconds today listening to Dr. Cobb provide the facts:
1. The COVID-19 vaccine contains live virus
2. The COVID-19 vaccine changes our DNA

One of the most common concerns we hear from community members about the COVID-19 vaccine is that it might not be safe. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine doesn't mean we can immediately return to pre-pandemic behaviors. In fact, it remains critical that we all continue to follow safety protocols such as mask-wearing, hand-washing and social distancing. Our Dr. Andrew French explains why.

We're pleased to announce that our hospital has returned to a "Green Level" for visitors. This means that while NO visitors are allowed in any COVID-19 or isolation rooms, up to two visitors at a time are allowed in most other patient rooms. Here are some additional rules:
• Only two visitors allowed for end-of-life COVID patients
• No children younger than 18 are permitted as visitors
• Labor & Delivery patients who are COVID-positive can welcome one visitor and/or a professional support person (midwife, doula, etc.)
• Visitors can see patients via an iPad; ask at the Reception Desk
• Visitation hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Our bodies don't develop instant immunity after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine - particularly after the first dose. That means we remain susceptible to contracting and spreading the virus, even up to two weeks after receiving the second dose.
We realize it can be confusing to keep up with all the latest vaccine news. But we're here to help. Visit our Vaccine Information page at https://www.centura.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccine-information for clarity and answers.
Today is National Wear Red Day, part of a coast-to-coast effort to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and to save lives. Our caregivers at the Women's Clinic wore red in force today! Here are some great reasons to GO RED:
G: Get Your Numbers. Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure and cholesterol.
O: Own Your Lifestyle. Stop smoking, lose weight, exercise, and eat healthy. It's up to you. No one can do it for you.
R: Realize Your Risk. We think it won't happen to us, but heart disease kills one of every three women.
E: Educate Your Family. Make healthy food choices for you and your family. Teach your kids the importance of staying active.
D: Don't Be Silent. Tell every woman you know that heart disease is our No. 1 killer.

Unsung heroes share stories from front lines of COVID-19 pandemic
Johnny Cashmore needed a kidney transplant, and his wife Jessica was willing to donate one of hers. When she wasn't a match, they did the next best thing -- participated in a paired exchange in which Jessica donated her kidney to someone on the list for whom she was a match. This living donation chain is still going, with seven people having received kidneys from it.
Johnny's procedure was performed at Centura Transplant at Porter Adventist Hospital. Dr. Alex Wiseman, executive director of kidney transplant at Centura Transplant, says paired exchanges such as the one that benefitted the Cashmore family can significantly decrease the wait time for a needed transplant. "Anytime that you can see something that seems to be not a possibility, turn into a possibility, it just is truly rewarding," Dr. Wiseman says.

Nothing brings us greater joy than sending you home from the hospital to complete your recovery. But it's important to be prepared for your return home.
• Make certain you know what medications and/or treatments you will need once home.
• Ask what you should watch for that would require a call to your caregiver and which caregiver to call if questions come up.
• Also ask when you should schedule follow up appointments.
#PatientSafetyAwarenssWeek #thumbsup2021 #psaw2021
Our caregivers know to wash their hands before working with patients, but that shouldn't stop you from reminding them. You are part of your health care team! Make sure your caregivers scrub their hands before working with you - even if they're wearing gloves. #thumbsup2021 #psaw2021 #PatientSafetyAwarenessWeek
As Patient Safety Awareness Week continues, so too does this familiar message: Scrub your hands! Wash your hands when entering and leaving the hospital, your patient room, the bathroom and any treatment rooms, and be sure to wash your hands if you handle any solid material. Good hand hygiene is one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep yourself healthy. #thumbsup2021 #psaw2021
Here's another tip in celebration of Patient Safety Awareness Week: Know your medications. Ask for the names of the medications you are receiving in the hospital and how they are expected to help. Caregivers should always check your identification band before giving a medication to make certain the correct medication is being given to the correct person. If you don’t see this, ask your caregivers to double check that the medication is meant for you. #thumbsup2021 #psaw2021
