We understand that the holidays can be a challenging time for those who have underwent bariatric surgery. Here are a few tips to help you stay on track this holiday season. 1. Don’t save your calories. You are more likely to overindulge if you arrive at a party hungry. 2. Don’t forget the basics. Pay attention to portion sizes, start with protein, eat slowly and track your intake. Keeping these basic rules in mind will help avoid overeating. 3. Go easy on the alcohol. It’s better to eat your calories than drink them. 4. Drink plenty of water. It’s important to stay hydrated. 5. Exercise. It’s much easier to get out of the habit of exercising than it is to get back into it once the holidays are over. Consider scheduling a time for exercise or organizing family activities that get everyone moving. 6. Be kind to yourself. So you overindulged a bit. Maybe you sampled a few too many goodies. That doesn’t mean all is lost. Forgive yourself, recommit to healthy patterns and move on. And remember, it’s OK to allow yourself an occasional treat.

Chronic diarrhea: Having more than four bowel movements per day for at least three months may be a sign of chronic gallbladder disease. Jaundice: Yellow-tinted skin, or jaundice, may be a sign of a block or stone in the common bile duct. Unusual stools or urine: Lighter-colored stools and dark urine are possible signs of a common bile duct block.

What is the gastric sleeve? During gastric sleeve surgery, our surgeons remove 80% of the stomach, leaving the patient with a smaller, tubular pouch. The term “robotic” often misleads people. Robots don’t perform surgery. Your surgeon performs surgery with da Vinci by using instruments that he or she guides via a console. The da Vinci system translates your surgeon’s hand movements at the console in real-time, bending and rotating the instruments while performing the procedure. The tiny wristed instruments move like a human hand, but with a greater range of motion.

Most colorectal cancers start as a growth on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. These growths are called polyps. Some types of polyps can change into cancer over time (usually many years), but not all polyps become cancer. The chance of a polyp turning into cancer depends on the type of polyp it is. There are different types of polyps. Adenomatous polyps (adenomas): These polyps sometimes change into cancer. Because of this, adenomas are called a pre-cancerous condition. The 3 types of adenomas are tubular, villous, and tubulovillous. Hyperplastic polyps and inflammatory polyps: These polyps are more common, but in general they are not pre-cancerous. Some people with large (more than 1cm) hyperplastic polyps might need colorectal cancer screening with colonoscopy more often. Sessile serrated polyps (SSP) and traditional serrated adenomas (TSA): These polyps are often treated like adenomas because they have a higher risk of colorectal cancer.
