Victory! Today, NYS lawmakers voted to repeal the #WalkingWhileTrans ban and seal prior convictions related to its enforcement. This statute had long been used to target, harass, coerce, and arrest cisgender and transgender women of color as well as gender-expansive people for how they dress, or for simply existing in public spaces. Its repeal is a significant step toward ensuring our community’s protection and safety. Thank you to the many brave community advocates like @TS_Candii who have long led the charge for change, and to Senator Brad Hoylman & Assemblywoman Amy R. Paulin for championing this effort. Black trans women and femmes have not only been at the epicenter of the struggle against racial patriarchy — even while being exiled from and unthought of by feminism — but also there’s an analysis, a study of racial patriarchy that is made available to us through the 1970s political formations: an archive of zines and political grammar (fag, non-men, street queen, etc.) that continues and that is essential to and indispensable for the struggle against racial patriarchy and carceral violence in the present tense. The House of Representatives voted on Thursday to pass the Equality Act, a bill that would ban discrimination against people based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It would also substantially expand the areas to which those discrimination protections apply. The bill has been introduced multiple times before and previously passed the House in 2019. However, the law's impact would be different in practical terms now than it was then. My name is Jazz Justine, I am a trans nonbinary (he/they) Black Boricua from the Bronx. I am currently studying to become a public youth librarian. I want to create a space in the library where underserved youth dealing with intersectional issues such as racism, poverty, misogyny, ableism, homophobia & transphobia can exist safely as themselves. My undergrad degree is in fine art and that whole experience made me feel like my artwork wasn’t good, after I graduated I stopped creating for a long time feeling worn out. I began teaching myself digital illustration in 2018 and have been able to reclaim my creativity. My primary artistic focus is fat Black femmes; It took me a very long time to love my own fat body, seeing other fat Black people (typically femmes) be confident and loving themselves out loud allowed me to see my own beauty and apply that love and appreciation inward. Depictions of queer life in art and literature have a tendency to be immersed in the spectacular. They present diverse existences as a collection of only exceptional moments – primarily centering trauma – with none of the texture of everyday life. For audiences, this creates narrow interpretations of LGBTQIA+ lives that are not dynamic and on a continuum. In "Memorial", American author Bryan Washington succeeds in demythologising queer life. He offers a narrative that gleams with not only the mundanity of daily life but also its surprising absurdity. Robert Jones, Jr., author of the instant New York Times best-selling novel “The Prophets,” joins us for a special Second Tuesday to discuss his debut novel with acclaimed playwright Donja Love. “The Prophets” is described as a stunning debut novel about the forbidden union between two enslaved young men on a Deep South plantation, the refuge they find in each other, and a betrayal that threatens their existence. With a lyricism reminiscent of Toni Morrison, Robert Jones, Jr. fiercely summons the voices of slaver and enslaved alike, from Isaiah and Samuel to the calculating slave master to the long line of women that surround them. As tensions build and the weight of centuries culminates in a climactic reckoning, “The Prophets” masterfully reveals the pain and suffering of inheritance, but is also shot through with hope, beauty, and truth, portraying the enormous, heroic power of love.
