Today we assisted with darting and removing Dongwe's collar. It was getting too small for him. During this time all scientific data is collected, microchips in the horn and the body are checked and DNA samples are taken to be placed in the Rhinp DNA database.

Toxins made by microscopic algae in water caused the previously unexplained deaths of hundreds of elephants in Botswana, wildlife officials say.
Botswana is home to a third of Africa's declining elephant population.The alarm was raised when elephant carcasses were spotted in the country's Okavango Delta between May and June.
Reports in June noted that tusks had not been removed, meaning poaching was not seen as a likely explanation.
Cyanobacteria is a toxic bacteria which can occur naturally in standing water and sometimes grow into large blooms known as blue-green algae.Anthrax poisoning has also been ruled out, according to senior wildlife department official Cyril Taolo.But questions still remain about the deaths, Mr Reuben told reporters."We have many questions still to be answered such as why the elephants only and why that area only. We have a number of hypotheses we are investigating."

Another successful notching of a black rhino. Rhino notching, or tagging, has been around for decades; but as a response to the devastating increase in poaching around Africa, conservationists are having to monitor the animals extremely closely.
Ear notches enable researchers to correctly identify different individuals on the Reserve. Each rhino is given a unique ear notch number, and microchips are placed in the horn and body for identification and security purposes. Measurements, horn shavings and skin samples are also taken for DNA analysis.

A couple interesting facts about nyala (pronounced en-yah-lah). Nyala are known to be nocturnal feeders and bulls have an average life expectancy of 19 years - which is really long for an antelope.

Working with elephant and their massive size can be tricky. The amount of tranquilizer is used is very delicate, too much and it could damage their organs and too little won't keep them down long enough until the tracking collar is securely fashioned. They have to be placed on their sides to keep organ damage to the minimum. We work fast in order to keep sedation time to a minimum.

'Three South African National Parks (Sanparks) staff members have been arrested in connection with rhino poaching at the Kruger National Park.
The two security guards and another worker from the technical services division were arrested earlier on Tuesday during an operation between Sanparks and police.
“Whilst not commenting on the merits or otherwise of this case, it is always disheartening when colleagues from Sanparks are involved in criminal activities. It breaks down trust amongst employees which impacts our responsibilities to act as an effective conservation authority serving the people of South Africa,” said Gareth Coleman, the managing executive of the Kruger National Park in a statement on Friday.'

Thank you to the Makhanda High Court judiciary and all involved in the prosecution of the notorious Ndlovu rhino poaching gang. Each of the group where given a 25 year sentence for 55 charges linked to deaths of at least 13 rhino ( brutally poached with immobilizing drugs)
The sentencing was appealed - and the appeal dismissed this morning - the sentence stands. One for the good guys!!!!

Always honored to be involved with a vital aspect of rhino protection. Notching is a way of identifying each individual animal. A small triangle of skin is removed from the rhino's ears and depending on where the notch is removed from, it has a corresponding numerical value. So each animal is given a numerical “name”. Along with the notching, the animal has a microchip inserted into its horn and under the skin. Whilst the animal is sedated, genetic material is collected to submit to RhODIS. This is completely noninvasive and the animal cannot feel it at all as their horns are made up of similar proteins as our finger nails and hair. These microchips correspond with each other so that the horn we can related to a specific animal. With poaching being so rife, it is so important to have these measures in place.

RhODIS is a tool that involves collection of unique DNA profile of each individual rhino into a database. This database can be presented by the zoo officials and government as legal evidence in cases of rhino poaching.
The South African Department of Environmental Affairs introduced amendments to the norms and standards for sample collection and identification of live and poached rhinos under the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004 which requires that samples are collected from all poached rhinos and other rhinos that are immobilized or die using RhODIS® kits which then have to be submitted to the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory for inclusion on the RhODIS® database. A number of other bodies including Peace Parks Foundation, the South African National Parks Honorary Rangers, the World Wildlife Fund, corporates and individuals have donated funds to support the development and implementation of RhODIS®.

"Amazon Watch is a nonprofit organization founded in 1996 to protect the rainforest and advance the rights of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin. They partner with Indigenous and environmental organizations in campaigns for human rights, corporate accountability and the preservation of the Amazon's ecological systems." The organization has drafted their "100 Day Amazon Climate Action Plan" which details how they intend to work alongside the U.N., major governing bodies and private partners in aid of cultivating a legitimate and sustainable avenue for environmental and humanitarian protection (including legitimate representation of figures working to safeguard threatened ecosystems!) We have- Chrissy, Stump and Rex keeping eyes on all directions. They like to watch out for themselves, but they're comforted knowing we're around to do it with them. Chrissy, is named after a giant amongst men "Chris Holcroft," an environmentalist and conservation beacon in South Africa. Tragically, he passed away in 2019 and we have done our very best to carry on his exceptional legacy. He stood for the protection, kind treatment and prosperity of endangered species. At VETPAW we all look up to him, as those looking to make a change and stand for voiceless wildlife should.
