From the desk of Mrs.. C........... "Why am I having such a hard time finding a job as a Medical Assistant?" If this is a question that you have been asking yourself lately, just know that you are not alone. I see this question posted a lot online and MA students, as well as experienced Medical Assistants, may run into this from time to time. It's the old saying...."when you are NOT looking for something, that is when you will find it". This can be frustrating for anyone, I know! Rather than feeling down, I suggest distracting yourself with a few tips and rewarding yourself by setting milestones that you can celebrate while you wait for that "dream job" that you have worked so very hard for! Here's how.......... 1. Review, review!!!! 2. Make a Plan 3. Widen your search! 4. Be Prepared! Let's start with "Review, review"! I have always said, ".....if you are having trouble landing the interview, review your marketing materials! If you can't nail the interview, review your interviewing skills!" If you were not offered employment at the conclusion of your externship,.......this post is for YOU!!! Now, some of you may be asking yourself; "What are marketing materials?" That's a fair question! You are essentially "selling" your skillset as an MA and this is a key concept of "Marketing". Marketing materials for a Medical Assistant might include things like a resume, cover letter, and portfolio. Most MA's may still be using the templated resume that they created in their Career Development class and... THAT'S OK!! A resume should be an extension of your personality, should be insight for the interviewer to observe your attention to detail and your professionalism. Make note, I said "should" and not "..has to be..". As you gain experience working with WORD documents, you may want to investigate formatting and developing options to customize your resume to suit your personal taste. You could also hire a professional to do this for you, but I don't suggest that necessary. Do it yourself, save the money, and add to your experience while working in WORD. I DO however suggest that you pay particular attention to formatting and most of all......SPELLING! I would also advise that if something is on your resume, make certain that you know what it is and can have a conversation about it. You may be tempted to add things to your resume to try and impress your interviewer and give you leverage in getting the position. I have seen it done but I would not advise that you do that. You could be asked to describe your experiences in that "embellished" area and then you could be stuck for an answer. It would not make or leave a good impression. I might also suggest keeping your resume updated. That is something that we can easily forget. Remember, your resume is considered a "living document" which means that it should evidence all your skills and qualifications as of right NOW! If ever you have to say to a prospective employer that "this is not my updated resume" or...."I need to update my resume" then you may have missed out on a very valuable and desired opportunity. Even if you are a new grad, it is likely that you can update your resume to include some exciting stuff you did at your externship. Your resume should list your skill set, certifications, licenses, awards, memberships, and volunteer activities that relate to your career path. Finally, don't be afraid to ask for help. There are quite a few resources out there that specialize in the areas of resume and interviewing. Look for the ones that don't charge a fee. Monster.com and Indeed.com are two of the ones that come to mind but there are others. Save your resume electronically and keep a copy on a flash drive that you keep nearby for those unexpected opportunities. Also, keep a printed copy that you can hand out at a moment's notice. Lesa Swimmer's Fun Eye Facts: Which one of these facts makes you say, "Eye didn't know that? • You actually see with your brain, not your eyes. Our eyes function like a camera, capturing light and sending data back to the brain. • You see things upside down - it is your brain which turns the image the right way up. • The eye is the fastest muscle in your body – hence why when something happens quickly, we say ‘in the blink of an eye!’ • Blue-eyed people share a common ancestor with every other blue-eyed person in the world. • The world’s most common eye color is brown. • Each of our eyelashes has a "life span of approximately 3 months. • Of all the muscles in our body, the eye muscles are the most active. • Blind people can see their dreams as long as they weren’t born blind. • Although our nose and ears keep growing throughout our lives, our eyes remain the same size from birth. • A newborn baby will cry, but not produce any tears. Babies do not produce tears until they are around six weeks old.
