On September 22nd, National Centenarian’s Day honors those who’ve celebrated 100 birthdays or more. Their personal histories create something legendary for those who hear them. Tribulations and experiences long forgotten reflect in their eyes. We benefit from every stories they tell and every remembrance they share. Here are some fun ways to celebrate this special day with them: ‣ Ask their secret to their longevity. ‣ Bring centenarians together for an online chat. ‣ Collect their favorite recipes and cooking tips. ‣ Create collections of 100 things related to a centenarian you know. For example, 100 pictures, 100 stories, 100 facts, 100 songs. #NationalCentenariansDay #CentenariansDay

October is National Physical Therapy Month! Regular physical activity is one of the most important things that you can do for your health. You don’t have to spend hours at the gym or purchase expensive equipment to meet the recommended physical activity guidelines. If pain or a condition limits your ability to participate in activities you enjoy, or you want to reduce your risk for chronic diseases, enhance your fitness, and prevent injuries, consider adding a physical therapist to your health care team. This week is International Infection Protection Week! We would like to remind everyone of the ways to prevent and fight the spread of infection especially during times like this. No matter where we are, germs exist. As we all know, they come in the form of bacteria and viruses. Preventing them from spreading an infection becomes a vital part of saving lives. Prevention is always our first line of defense when it comes to infection and hand-washing is one of the first steps toward prevention. We should always wash our hands: * After using the bathroom * Before and after preparing food * Before eating * After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose Another way to prevent infection is by getting the proper vaccinations. Vaccinations, or immunizations, prevent infections from bacteria or viruses from making us sick. In some cases, they can help us recover from an infection more quickly. Interested in learning more? Happy Kwanzaa everyone! Kwanzaa is a celebration that honors African heritage in African-American culture. Every year from December 26 – January 1, Kwanzaa brings people together for feasts, gift-giving, and the celebration of family, community and culture. The name Kwanzaa comes from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits” in Swahili. On each of the seven nights of Kwanzaa, families gather and light one of the seven candles on the Kinara, which is a candle holder. Once this is done, one of the seven principles of Nguzo Saba are discussed among the family. These principles are values of African culture: 1. Unity 2. Self-determination 3. Collective work and responsibility 4. Cooperative Economics 5. Purpose 6. Creativity 7. Faith This month, do your own research on the history and meaning of Kwanzaa to learn more and appreciate the reason it came about in the first place. Whether you are African-American or not, you are encouraged to take part! #Kwanzaa
