About

TN Voices formally organized in 1990 by Tipper Gore as a statewide coalition of individuals, agencies, and organizations working together as a Steering Council to promote children's health and education services. Since then, it has progressed to become a statewide and national source of referral, support, and advocacy for individuals with mental health needs, their families, and the professionals that serve them. Through the 13 main programs, TN Voices has informed, supported, and assisted individuals across the state.

Throughout #BlackHistoryMonth, we will be honoring Black leaders who have made strides in the Black community and beyond through mental health advocacy and activism. Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) stated the practice of giving black men and women alcohol when they weren’t working was part of a system designed to reduce slave rebellions and maintain social control over them. For this reason, he advocated for abstinence from using substances to cope, and founded the Black Temperance Movement. “We cannot stagger to freedom.”

Throughout #BlackHistoryMonth, we will be honoring Black leaders who have made strides in the Black community and beyond through mental health advocacy and activism. Dr. Inez Beverly Prosser (1895-1934) was the first Black woman to complete a PhD in psychology in 1933. She had to leave Texas to pursue her degree because no graduate schools there accepted Black women. She studied how racially integrated and racially segregated schools impact Black youth.
