Today is Erev Sukkot and all week our wonderful new interns have been creating art decorations for the Sukkah with the residents. The residents and staff have really enjoy getting to know our interns and they quickly have become embedded in the community. In the upcoming posts, we will introduce them formally. Chag Sameach!
Ms. R our leader of our morning Heart Healthy Walking Group is originally from Florida. She has two sons, one lives with his family in Israel and the other lives in Florida with his Family. Ms. R's son wanted to speak to her before the rest of the High Holidays began. She got to see much of her Florida family on a multi-person Skype call and learned the family welcomed a Great Granddaughter to her already large mishpocha. Keeping the residents connected to their families, however possible, is so important to us and those moments of joy that are created last for a lifetime. The Tudor Heights family is sending lots of nachas to Ms.'s R., family and the new bundle of joy!
When your granddaughter is a flute player and does impromptu performances during your outdoor visits. It really helps to create moments of joy during these unusual times. Continuous visits from our resident’s families, helps the residents here never to forget who their loved ones are and how important they are to them. We do everything we can to make their visits engaging and enjoyable. ( The family only took of their mask for the picture and were more than six feet apart)
When gardening was your passion and you never lost your green thumb, it is imperative to continue to honor that legacy however you can, we will always find a way Ms. B!
When you play against an engineer, you usually loose because his vocabulary is vastly superior to yours, way to go Mr. B!
Here at Tudor Heights we begin to prepare for our High Holy Days. Our residents have a very deep rooted tradition and the staff and community will come together (virtually) to honor our residents legacy and traditions. L’Shana Tova to you and your families.
I would like to formally introduce two of the newest staff members here at Tudor Heights. Today we celebrate one month since our wonderful interns have begun engaging the community. The staff & residents would tell you it feels like they have been a part of the Tudor Heights family for a long time! They will each tell you a little bit about themselves & what brought them here. My name is Devora Schmell and I grew up in Baltimore. I recently started field placement at Tudor Heights because I am currently pursuing a degree in Social Work through Wurzweiler School of Social Work. I will be assisting the Valeo Director by running and planning programming and I will be engaging with all the residents throughout the day! I am very excited to continue to get to know the all the residents and help coordinate engagement that everyone enjoys.

Hi, my name is Bracha Golub and I am from Baltimore Maryland. I am 21 years old and in graduate school for social work. Becoming a social worker has always been a dream of mine, as I love helping and empowering others. I feel extremely lucky that I am completing my Field Work hours in Tudor Heights. These residents fill me up with happiness and positive energy, and we have a great time together talking, laughing, playing games, engaging, and exercising. I love Tudor Heights because I feel as if I am part of a family!
Rebbetzin G is celebrating her 97 birthday. She was able to celebrate on a zoom call today with people from all over the country and the world. She saw family for the first time in years, which was very emotional. The family and staff got to sing happy birthday to her she got the have her favorite Strawberry Shortcake, the party was a hit! Then right after that she had a couple outdoor visits with her family local including her son and daughter in law. Rebbetzin is a Mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and an absolute delight to come to work every day to try to engage. She is always easy going, kind and selfless. Creating moments of joy and honoring her legacy comes natural to myself and this community. We wish you a healthy, happy, and joy filled year, till 120!
Ms. B. from the LES as she calls it, Tudor Heights' most creative resident is back at it again. This time she is creating necklaces for her fellow floormates. "She said, "I need a break from the painting to do something else". 💙💙
Hug your loved ones extra hard today, for them and for the families who don't get to do that. Remember the 11 who were killed while praying, one year ago today at the Tree of Life Synagogue. May their memory be a blessing.
Virtual pet therapy is a wonderful alternative to Pets on Wheels, which is unable to provide their services to residents in person. We have always had Pets on Wheels here in the community, but because of social distancing they are not allowed into the community. Today we had our first of many virtual Pets on Wheels events, it went wonderfully, residents got to feel as if they were pet owners and all the moments of joy that it creates. Please check out www.petsonwheels.org. in your state.
Here at Tudor Heights we as a community celebrate our Veterans. It has been a week long celebration, with conversations, virtual programs with other veterans from MD and today we celebrate as a community. We have five residents who served and today we honor them with a Veterans Day Breakfast. Thank you all for your service. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Ms. W a newer resident in the community has made he self at home here. She is smart, well spoken and tells it like it is. She is our Scrabble & Yiddish group leader. She is always asking to hear lectures, speakers and anything intellectual. Yesterday she took part in a zoom lecture/talk with famous Jewish Polish film directors and told me, "it was so very nice to be a part of this talk". I know she is looking forward to the next lecture/seminar.
A bond that our family members have with the residents has remained strong, even with limited contact. So when they do get to see their love one, their joy makes them break out in song!
Seeinig your Dad make you break out in song:)
The community exercise group has a lot of calories to burn after the wonderful Thanksgiving meal. The group did not miss a beat! Both floors were amazing.
The community enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving meal yesterday, watched the Macy's Day Parade( A tradition here), & spent some time out side walking and getting some fresh air, during a unseasonable warm day. They ended their day with a movie night & Singing In the Rain.
Yesterday the community celebrated Ms. B Birthday, her family treated the staff and residents to their favorite nosh, cookies from Rosendorff. We wish you all the best, till 120 Ms. B!
The Virtual Pets on Wheels engagement was a huge success. The interns led the way and made sure the residents on each floor participated, asked questions and shared their memories and love of having a pet growing up.
A few residents and I had a wonderful time during our discussion group in the old building. Some Davened, and some spent quality time in the library. Mr. B and I have a common author we love to read. A local boy, you may have heard of him Tom Clancy!
Our community is so resilient, and the residents are a testament of patience and perseverance. These are the faces of joy when there is so much unknown out in the world & our families & community come together to give life to our residents. Mr. J is a very lucky guy with family from all over the country and world who love and adore him. They continue to make him a part of their lives, even if virtually!
The residents are connected to the community in so many ways. The community has not forgotten these residents and they do whatever they can to uplift them and continue their rooted tradition. Whether its sweet gifts from the school kids or virtual talks from Rabbi and other members of the religious community. Today we received an anonymous fruit basket from the community to thank our staff for all they do during these uncertain time!
Ms. B has been so strong during these uncertain times. Her Daughters has been her rock and they communicate daily, either by skype phone or outdoor visit. Her daughter loves reading poetry with her, playing her violin while Ms. B listens and they sing songs and prayers on Erev Shabbat. Honoring Ms. tradition is very important to us and we will continue to make moments of joy with her while keeping her connected to her entire family is very important to us and takes a whole team to get it done. Today she watched a virtual Bat Mitzvah of her cousin from Tennessee's.
The residents are so lucky to have so many free resources to engage them socially and intellectually. Recently the Myerberg Senior Center had a wonderful lecture/discussion on the history of King David. A few residents were able to listen to the lecture and think back to when they were taught the history of King David in school and in Synagogue. The residents share a deep rooted history much like King David's, and we honor that legacy daily here. Chag Sameach Hanukkah.
We are a community that is rooted in tradition and every day something is done to honor our resident’s legacy. Today is the 2nd day of Hanukkah and our virtual services with Rabbi Mickey continued. He had a special guest today, his two-year-old daughter who just gave the resident an instant mood boost! His daughter was a handful and she took a little snapshot of the rabbi during his service. Chag Sameach.
Ms. W showed me the cutest Hanukkah card I have ever seen just now. I was bringing her daily hydration and nosh, and then she said,” have you ever seen a cutter card”? I said, “never”. Take a look at this card her Grandson sent, unbelievable! Chag Sameach.
Ms. L a new resident has really settled into the community, she is always front row for our hallway exercise group. She recently celebrated a birthday and is beloved by her son and daughter who mean the world to her. When her son asked the intern and I to be a part of a very sacred Jewish tradition and custom, we were honored to take part in hanging of her apartment Mezuzah. The intern said the prayer which now gives Ms. L a constant reminder of God's presence in her life every time she goes in & out of her apartment. Keeping our residents rooted in their tradition is something we all take very seriously and appreciate when families allow us to be a part of it. Chag Chanukah Sameach.
Chag Erev Urim Sameach and wishing your family peace & light this holiday season from the entire Tudor Heights family. During this uncertain time, you can be sure the community will continue to be rooted in tradition and thus continue to honor the resident’s journey. Chag Sameach
Hanukkah has ended & we as a community came together to honor the residents legacy and rooted tradition. Resident got to experience Hanukkah differently this year. They got to attend virtual services, eat Latkes & Sufganiyot, and of course be part of the eight days of candle lighting. Our local community came together to give back to Tudor Heights. The residents enjoyed virtual performances full of singing & dancing as well care packages full of the residents favorite things. As we near the end of the year, we look back and appreciate being healthy & well and hope 2021 will be filled with more family hugs and kisses.
Here's to a bright New Year and a fond farewell to the old; here's to the things that are yet to come, and to the memories that we hold & have made.” May you have a prosperous New Year. Wishing you all a happy, healthy New Year. May the New Year bless you with health, wealth, and happiness, from the entire Tudor Heights family. May the new year bring more hugs and kisses from family.
The residents enjoyed a delightful program/discussion on The Jews of Argentina - A two-part series. The experienced a virtual tour of Jewish Buenos Aires with local tour guide Rabbi Ernesto Yattah! The residents experienced the beautiful sites this city has to offer and learned about its rich Jewish history! Ms. B said, " I have family from their, it is a beautiful city".
Happy New Year from everyone here at Tudor Heights. Music plays a large roll in the community in honoring our residents rooted tradition. So of course we had to have Ms. S, everyone's favorite piano teacher who taught basically the entire community for over three decades, start the year on a positive note with a tune!
This Afternoon residents enjoyed a wonderful conversation on how cafés created modern Jewish culture. The residents listened to the winner of the American Jewish Studies 2019 Jordan Schnitzer Book Award. Shachar Pinsker explores how the milieu of the café played a critical role in the transition into modernity, creating spaces for residents and newcomers to meet and exchange ideas, often inspiring new literary works and cultural trends.
The community has a lot of hidden gems. One of them is our library. When I asked Mr. I to be our in house librarian, since he was a Librarian at Baltimore Hebrew Collège for many years, he jumped at the opportunity. The Library is open for business. We look forward to having discussions, games and residents coming and enjoying the quaintness of this special space.
This weeks Zentengle art group enjoyed some light piano music from the community & neighborhood's favorite piano teacher Ms.'s.
Today the residents enjoyed a more serious discussion/conversation with Ron Dermer - Israel's Ambassador to the United States. Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer, spoke on the topic of The Abraham Accords. Ron served as Israel's Minister of Economic Affairs in the United States. From 2009-2013, he served as Senior Advisor to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It was a spirited and informative talk.
