The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located in front of each ear where the lower jaw meets the skull. The initials "TMJ" refer to the joint itself. Problems or pain in the joint or muscles in the head and neck region are often referred to as temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Common symptoms of TMD include:
* Jaw pain
* Headaches
* Earaches
* Neck pain
* Aching of the teeth
* TMJ noises (clicking, popping sounds)
* Limited jaw range of motion
* Changes in bite relationship
These symptoms may indicate a disorder within the temporomandibular joint itself or the muscles associated with jaw function or both.
