We are experiencing another heat wave this Labor Day weekend in Northern California. Leave pets home! Have plenty of fresh water available! Walk only early morning or evenings when temperatures are lower! If you suspect heat stroke in your pet take them to the nearest emergency hospital to have them checked by a veterinarian. #keepthemindoors #nocarrides #freshwateralways
Thank you to the Nor cal leadership team for the Kona Ice truck treats ! With 100 degree outside and busy days it was just what we needed ! @konaice
We know you’re so excited to go on some autumn nature walks with your dog, but for this #FallSafetyTip, make sure you watch out for snakes, some of which can be venomous! They’re preparing for hibernation and may be a little crankier if disturbed by a curious pet! 🐍 When walking or hiking, if something happens to your pet, be sure to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. #VCApets
Happy Thanksgiving! We’re wishing you a beautiful day full of warmth, love and family (even if you’re celebrating a bit differently this year)! 🦃💖#vcapets
Thanksgiving and pets go hand in hand… after all, aren't you forever thankful you adopted your four-legged friend and welcomed all those cold-nosed kisses into your life? However, before the celebration begins, it's a good idea to make sure your Turkey Day will be as pet-friendly as possible. No matter how much you plan, holiday mishaps can still happen. It's a good idea to ask your veterinarian about their holiday hours ahead of time and add the telephone numbers for an emergency veterinarian clinic. Keep a pet first-aid kit handy, and remember that in any emergency, the best thing you can do is to stay calm. We will be closed on Thanksgiving. For emergencies we recommend VCA PetCare East (707)579-3900 or VCA Animal Care Center (707) 584-4343. Call the office if you have any questions. (707)546-1277
We would like to introduce our newest member of the VCA Devotion family. Jonelle will be working as a Client Service Representative. We are excited to have her as part of our team and alongside Sally, she will be assisting our clients when they call the office. Jonelle was born and raised in Santa Rosa and graduated from Piner High School. Her hobbies include sports and fishing. She lives with her family and a dog named Kaboda ( a German shepherd mix), and Sadie the cat. Welcome Jonelle!
As we navigate through the pandemic, the veterinary community has noticed that many things have changed, but the love for our pets and the need for their companionship has not. The large increase in the number of new puppies reinforces the fact that during a time when we are isolated from people, we rely as much, if not more, on the human animal bond. This is a great time for our pets! More people are working from home and able to spend more time with their long time and/or new companion. However, how do you socialize a puppy during social distancing? We know how important socializing and training is for dogs. An unsocialized dog can develop behavior problems and even suffer from fear, anxiety and stress. Many of the dogs released to the shelter and rescue organizations are due to a lack of training and socialization. Our neighboring facility K9 Activity Club has come up with an amazing solution to this problem - puppy camp! They have created a camp where dogs 3-18 months of age can stay at the facility for 3 days. This way they get a lot of socialization with safe people in a safe environment. The dogs will experience different situations, water play, training sessions, and so much more. For more information, or to get your puppy registered, follow the link below. https://k9activityclub.com/puppy-pawsitivity/ Another important part of keeping our pet healthy is following exam and vaccination schedules for preventative and routine care. This includes intestinal deworming, heartworm preventative and flea and tick control recommended by your pet’s doctor. Puppy camp will require appropriate vaccinations based on age including Da2pp, Bordetella, Canine Influenza (flu) and rabies. Canine influenza has been on the rise over the last few years in California. It is required at boarding, daycare and grooming facilities because K9 Flu virus is highly contagious among dogs once exposed. The vaccination will require a booster in 3 weeks, then annually. If you would like to schedule your dog for a flu vaccination or have any questions, please give the office a call at (707) 546-1277 K9ACTIVITYCLUB.COM Puppy K9 Kamp – K9 Activity Club
An adult dog should have 42 teeth in total, that’s 20 on top of their jaw and 22 on the bottom. Puppies have only 28 temporary teeth! Cats have 26 baby teeth and 30 permanent teeth. There are some big differences between canines and felines. For dogs, calculus can cause irritation to the gums which can lead to gingival recession and bone loss. Cats get cat-specific diseases such as stomatitis and resorptive lesions where the teeth and/or gums become painful and inflamed. Remember that cats are stoic! Cats will not show clinical signs until the periodontal disease is advanced so watch for any odd behavior.
