We know you’re so excited to go on some autumn nature walks with your dog, but for this #FallSafetyTip, make sure you watch out for snakes, some of which can be venomous! They’re preparing for hibernation and may be a little crankier if disturbed by a curious pet! 🐍 When walking or hiking, if something happens to your pet, be sure to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. #VCApets
Today is Global Cat Day, a special occasion devoted to unowned, free-roaming “community” cats. These cats often get a bad rap but it’s important to understand that these cats aren’t so different from our beloved pets. As a matter of fact, many are living on the streets as a result of being abandoned by their families. We've included some tips to help manage and care for the community cats in your neighborhood. Helping these cats starts by being a responsible guardian! Spay/neuter your own cat and keep them indoors. * In just seven years, a single pair of cats and their offspring could produce a staggering total of 420,000 kittens! #VCApets

Polly the Pomeranian is showing off her shiny smile in light of Pet Dental Health Month! ☀#vcapets Did you know that small breed dogs, including Pugs, Pomeranians, Yorkshire Terriers, and Chihuahuas, are more susceptible to tartar buildup, gum recession, and tooth loss? The best way to promote good dental health for your pet is through routine tooth brushing and veterinary dental care visits.
Today is World Cancer Day.🎗 Did you know that cancer is the leading cause of death in pets? Similar to humans, as pets age, their likelihood of developing cancer increases. The best way to reduce the onset of cancer in our pets is through prevention. The likelihood of developing cancer may be reduced by limiting our pet's exposure to environmental pollutants and chemicals ☠, spaying and neutering at an early age, maintaining a healthy weight 💪, feeding a high quality and nutritionally balanced diet ⚖, and scheduling regular exams with a veterinarian for early cancer detection and diagnosis 🏥. View the video below for more information about how veterinarians screen for cancer in their patients. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuV4sPlTg8A&ab_channel=AskVCA YOUTUBE.COM What is a pet cancer screening?

February is National Pet Dental Health Month! Brushing your pet's teeth is the most effective way of maintaining their dental hygiene and for today's #TrainingTuesday, we are going to discuss how to begin acclimating your pet to tooth brushing. It may take several weeks of daily training sessions to get your pet to tolerate you brushing their teeth. It is important to be patient, take it slow, and keep the process as fun as possible for your pet by rewarding your pet with treats and love after each successful step. Step 1: Spend a few training sessions getting your pet comfortable with you touching their mouth. Do this by first touching your pet's mouth and giving them a reward immediately after. Step 2: Once your pet is comfortable with you touching their mouth, introduce them to the toothbrush and toothpaste. Reward with treats or love whenever your pet licks the toothbrush (no chewing). Step 3: With the toothpaste on the toothbrush, gently lift your pet's lip up and place some toothpaste on their front teeth. Reward your pet immediately after. Step 4: Once your pet is comfortable with you placing the toothpaste in their mouth, begin brushing your pet's front teeth for only a couple seconds at a time. Reward after each session. Once your pet is comfortable with the brushing, you can start to increase the duration of the brushing. Only brush you pet's front teeth until they become more comfortable. Step 5: Begin slowly brushing further back in your pet's mouth, moving further back during each session as your pet becomes more comfortable. Remember that each pet learns at different paces. It is important to take it slow and make the experience as fun and positive as possible for you and your pet! The entire process may take several weeks or months to complete. 😃 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyatN4TEIb8&ab_channel=AskVCA YOUTUBE.COM How do I brush my pet's teeth?
