When a child is deprived of blood and oxygen in utero, it can damage their brain and result in #cerebralpalsy and other #developmentaldisabilities. This pattern and mechanism of injury is known as hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, or #hie. Often, this type of injury results from #medicalmalpractice, resulting in a #birthinjury when providers are not diligent in caring for #pregnant and laboring #mothers.
A treatment was developed for these affected babies a number of years ago utilizing #therapeutichypothermia, where the #newborn #brain is cooled, and slowly re-warmed, reducing reperfusion injuries and the rate of cerebral palsy.
A study that concluded in 2017 also revealed that this #coolingtherapy significantly reduces the rate of #epilepsy in this population of affected babies.

The #FDA announced on October 16 that it is requiring labeling changes for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (#NSAIDs). These changes include new labeling to explain that if women take the medications around 20 weeks or later in their #pregnancy, the drugs can cause rare but serious kidney problems in the unborn #baby, which can lead to low levels of amniotic fluid (the protective cushion surrounding the unborn baby) and the potential for #pregnancycomplications.

A number of places, including Britain and Isreal, have since shifted their stance on the vaccination of pregnant women.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has said that coronavirus vaccines should not be denied to pregnant women.
