Did you know that 1 in 5 kids experiences bullying, but 5 out of 5 kids can prevent it? October is National Bullying Prevention Month, so continuing the efforts of our @anti.bullying.camp, but for younger kids, we have classes for preK & Kindergarten aged kids to help make them more bully-resistant. Can you imagine how planting seeds of empowerment against different forms of social oppression for a child as young as 3.5 years old can give them the tools to negotiate school life more easily? Try an Online Private Lesson and see for yourself why students & parents have been able to share their stories of empowered resistance with us for 25 years! Repost from @loveisrespectofficial. If you are, or have a teenager who’s started dating, definitely follow them for some valuable healthy relationship tips and help with dating abuse...
This is a big problem. Could it be because teens associate the word ‘abuse’ with only its physical forms? Perhaps they mistakenly perceive negative, esteem-stealing, autonomy controlling attention as Love? Violence is defined as an act of aggression against a person who resists, but physical violence is more recognizable than violence against one’s mental being, especially when young emotions are involved.
Teaching teens & kids about unconditional love is incomplete without modeling how to recognize what it is and what it isn’t, don’t you think? We can empower ourselves physically with martial arts & self defense, but it’s equally important to empower ourselves with emotional awareness and resilience too.

Whether in person or virtually, our methods have adjusted somewhat, but the goal remains unchanged: to empower kids to believe in themselves and the power of their voice, and to teach them to set and respect the boundaries of those around them, particularly if their experiences are different from their own. According to parents, our lessons have been valuable in teaching kids to negotiate and express their emotions, especially in these most uncertain of times. We continue to be grateful to be of service to our families. #onlinemartialartsforkids #kidsactivities #YouthEmpowerment #ChildDevelopment #UpstanderKids #Dojo2Go

When Mahatma Gandhi was studying law at the University College of London, a white professor, whose last name was Peters, disliked him intensely and always displayed prejudice and animosity towards him..
Also, because Gandhi never lowered his head when addressing him as he expected, there were always "arguments" and confrontations. One day, Mr. Peters was having lunch at the dining room of the University, and Gandhi came along with his tray and sat next to the professor. The professor said, "Mr Gandhi, you do not understand. A pig and a bird do not sit together to eat."
Gandhi looked at him as a parent would a rude child and calmly replied, "You do not worry professor. I'll fly away," and he went and sat at another table. Mr. Peters, reddened with rage, decided to take revenge on the next test paper, but Gandhi responded brilliantly to all questions.
Mr. Peters, unhappy and frustrated, asked him the following question. "Mr Gandhi, if you were walking down the street and found a package, and within was a bag of wisdom and another bag with a lot of money, which one would you take?" Without hesitating, Gandhi responded, "The one with the money, of course."
Mr. Peters, smiling sarcastically said, "I, in your place, would have taken the wisdom, don't you think?" Gandhi shrugged indifferently and responded, "Each one takes what he doesn't have."
Mr. Peters, by this time was fit to be tied. So great was his anger that he wrote on Gandhi's exam sheet the word "idiot" and gave it to Gandhi.. Gandhi took the exam sheet and sat down at his desk, trying very hard to remain calm while he contemplated his next move.
A few minutes later, Gandhi got up, went to the professor and said to him in a dignified but sarcastically polite tone, "Mr. Peters, you signed the sheet, but you did not give me the grade."
To all my friends who celebrate,

Years ago, an asthmatic young student learned that breath work was an integral part of meditation in his martial arts classes. When his training progressed and the cardiovascular challenges mounted, he learned that such breathing could help him to bring relief during the onset of asthma attacks during class. Later, he started to apply them outside of that environment, and was able to get a better handle on his condition, and would return to them when he didn’t have his inhaler handy.
To this day, Master Alonzo still relies on them in a pinch. This is how breathing exercises came to have a special place in our students’ learning process, and they’ve become so crucial in these most uncertain of times.

It’s been found that 80% of New Year's resolutions fail by February. Maybe it’s because a holiday filled week is too little time to come up with a resolution that will bring meaningful change. Maybe we need a month to take a more introspective look at the previous trip around the sun to properly evaluate what we love and what we’d like to improve about ourselves. Maybe sharing those goals is what William Benjamin Basil King meant when he said "Be Bold and Mighty Forces will come to your aid." #Maybe #BeBold #MightyForces #possibilities #teacher #student #NeverStopLearning #UpstanderKids #YouGotThis

Raise the daughter people are a little scared of. Teach her to be fierce, independent, and not give a crap about what other people think. Raise her to be a little firecracker who is going to change the world and make a difference; someone who’s looking to break the glass ceiling, not looking for a glass slipper. Wishing two students in this throwback pic (and the rest of our students testing this week) the best of luck on their belt tests this week! #girlpower Photo Credit: @bonniekopf
Visiting these pre-pandemic memories while making some powerful new ones via distance learning has been a truly rewarding lesson in resilience through improvising, learning to accept failure & loss, and adapting. We invite you to join us as we continue on this journey of inspiring and empowering kids... now more than ever. #BeBold #UpstanderKids

In ancient times, you trained so hard, not for the sake of killing people, but for the love of you family: for the love of your mother, your father, your children, your tribe, and your body. It is the love of life! That's why we train so hard, so you can preserve life." -- Dan Inosanto #love #warriors #teachers

Reasons I love having girls in our martial arts classes:
- [x] To empower girls to NOT think of themselves as any less capable than boys; that they are NO less deserving of opportunity and respect just because of who they are.
- [x] Having girls in class makes it easier to teach boys to practice RESPECT, especially when a girl says NO; that boys are NOT entitled to anything (attention, a place in line, a victory) that a girl won’t give them freely without manipulation.
- [x] Girls and Boys learn the invaluable practice of setting and respecting each other’s Healthy Boundaries; and to speak up, be supportive of, or actively present when they recognize that someone else’s boundaries are not being respected.
- [x] Boys can learn firsthand that girls are just as capable and deserving of opportunity and respect as they are; how to be mindfully supportive of their sister’s or classmate’s efforts, in particular if they fall short of their goals.
- [x] All kids benefit from practicing Empathy in class: Solutions to challenges that effect everyone can be easier to achieved if everyone is included in their pursuit. Solutions to challenges that effect only a few begin with empathy... because ultimately, we’re all in this together!

The saddest part about this kind of training is that it is still very relevant (some might even say necessary) today. As someone who’s dedicated his to teaching kids how to deal with bullying, there are invaluable lessons in this piece of history. #CelebratingBlackHistory

In this famous photograph by photojournalist Eve Arnold, a young civil rights activist is trained not to react to provocation at a 1960 non-violence training session in Virginia. The training was organized by the Congress for Racial Equality or CORE, one of the major civil rights organizations of the period. Founded in 1942, by the early 1960s, CORE had dozens of chapters around the US, including many on college campuses. Since CORE frequently used civil disobedience to challenge segregation and other discriminatory policies, they often held nonviolence trainings such as the one pictured here.
One of CORE's most famous initiatives, organized with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee or SNCC, were the Freedom Rides during which mixed race groups of civil rights activists would ride buses into the segregated South. During the first ride, the Freedom Riders were attacked by mobs and severely beaten at several stops in Alabama. After the initial group of activists were forced to abandon the ride, SNCC leader Diane Nash organized new groups of activists to take their place. Throughout the summer of 1961, more than 60 Freedom Rides crisscrossed the South with an estimated 450 riders participating.
During their rides, the activists would often protest against other forms of racial discrimination they encountered by sitting together at segregated lunch counters and restaurants. This tactic proved especially effective when they targeted large chains, which would often choose to desegregate their businesses in the face of Northern boycotts. The activists frequently faced harassment during such sit-ins ranging from food and drinks being poured on them or smoke being blown in their faces to beatings and arrests.
Nonviolence trainings such as this one were intended to help prepare the activists, many of whom were high school and college students, for such treatment. The courage of these and other civil rights activists helped bring the issue of segregation to national attention and inspired many people to join the growing movement for racial equality.

One of the simplest ways to show kindness is to share some encouraging words. In a time of so much negativity, lifting others up can be the difference between tragedy and triumph. We like triumph!

After 20+ years of working with kids, the thing I am most proud of is when they come together to cheer one another on in the face of mutual adversity, to continually raise the bar for one another as they venture outside of their delicate comfort zones into the rarified air of 'beyond perceived capabilities.' And we who witness it are all the better for it: students, teachers, and parents. #goals #achievement #community #focus #determination #grit #friendship #respect #love #kids #martialarts #teacher #student #parent #santamonica #pacificpalisades #marvista #brentwood #losangeles #marinadelrey #playadelrey #culvercity

After posting a highlight video of all of the events of a former student from his first tournament years ago (in which he won a bronze, bronze and then a gold), the words that accompanied the video were "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated." ~Maya Angelou These kind words were from his Mom. #grateful
A young boy traveled across Japan to the school of a famous martial artist. "How long must I study to become the finest karate-ka in the land?" "Ten years at least" answered the Master. "What if I study twice as hard as all the other students?" "Twenty years" replied the Master. "Why is it that when I say I will work harder, you tell me it will take longer?" "The answer is clear. When one eye is fixed upon the destination, only one eye is left with which to find the way." #ThisIstheWay

To paraphrase Frederick Douglass: “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men [adults].” Accountability has become so rare these days that we should start thinking of it and teaching it as a Life Skill to be learned in childhood instead for a right of passage to adulthood. #accountability #childdevelopment #mindfulness #lifeskills #familylife #teacherslife #moms #dads #UpstanderKids #abettertomorrow #frederickdouglas

Because #InternationalWomensDay always starts with #GirlPower! We’re grateful for the challenges we’ve been able to face together with our families, knowing that resolve and resilience against future adversities are built, brick by brick, in such moments: “There is freedom waiting for you, On the breezes of the sky, And you ask "What if I fall?" Oh but my darling, What if you fly?” ~Erin Hanson.
This was the response from a parent of a student I taught long ago, when I originally posted the pic of me with my Mom for #InternationalWomensDay We had no idea at the time, but we’re grateful to have been of service to this family. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
