“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” This day, O God, is yours, and we are yours, creatures of your own making. We thank you for breathing into us the breath of life and for giving us a relationship with you. May our relationship with you expand to include others in our circle of family and friends. In this season of separation from loved ones because of the pandemic, be the spirit that still connects us and that gives us hope. Grant us patience within life and eyes to see you in every day. With your benediction, may we live for you and for others in this new week, through the One who is our peace, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The prayer of St. Francis of Assisi is rich for us in any season of our lives. “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.
“O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.”
Lord, thank you for the treasure that is this prayer of St. Francis. May we be enriched by it and thus, be better connected to you and to others, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Renewing God, you watched over us while we slept last night, and now you accompany us in the new day. Thank you for your watchful presence. We need to be new again. We need to be washed clean of our sin, forgiven, and set on a new path. Assure our hearts of your forgiving work within us. Wash us clean of our failures to live up to the highest and best that we know. In the new life that you give, guide us to live as Jesus lived, to love as Jesus loved, and to serve as Jesus served. Touch others with Christ through us. This we pray in his holy name. Amen.

May we draw strength from you for all the challenges we face. We reach for your guiding hand in the uncertainties that beset us. Give us this day the comfort and joy of your presence.

But our bodies and souls know better.

When we rest we call out the lie, for the sake of those fooled, into things too powerful for rest, for the sake of those who are unsafe, when they pause for peace. From out of the darkness and rest of the night, we come to you, O gracious and welcoming God. We want to see you and know you and love you and serve you this day. Grant us release today from troubling thoughts, negative attitudes, and old episodes of brokenness. Let your forgiveness flow over us, taking away our sin and giving us a new beginning. Only you can make us new, and we trust you to remake us after the image of Christ. Let the example of his life be our guide in every day that we may be more and more like him in all our ways. Someway, somehow—today lead us to make a positive difference in the life of someone else, and give us grace to open ourselves to others who seek to make a positive difference in our lives. We lay our lives upon your altar; use us, employ us, or lay us aside for a time according to your gracious will and purpose, through the One who placed himself upon your altar, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Ahh! The wondrous delight as we watch the expression of anticipation, see the wide eyes open, and the hands move quickly to tear away the paper of a neatly wrapped Christmas gift, hear the squeal of delight as he sees the gift... then experience the love of a hug and a quiet, “Thank you! Grandpa. Just what I wanted!”
Prayer:
O God! Give us excitement as we prepare our lives for the celebration of Christmas. Thank you for the gift of each new day and your pres- ence, love and grace. Help us to share your love with all. In the name of Jesus—Amen.

God of Providence and Power, you have seen us through the month of November and to this Lord’s Day, the first Sunday of Advent. We thank you for your providential care for us. Now we are waiting and watching, O God, watching for your appearance in our lives and in our world in human form. Open our eyes that we might see. Open our hearts that we may sense your saving presence in our midst. Our world so needs your redeeming presence. Strife among the nations, division and polarization in our beloved America, the plague of the pandemic, the pain of separation from loved ones—all of this weighs us down emotionally, spiritually, and even physically. Help us, loving God, to face all that threatens us with supreme confidence in your power and grace to see us through this valley of the shadow of death. Hold us close to your heart that we may be lifted up and strengthened to live victoriously in this time. All of this we offer in the name of the Coming One who is in our midst even now, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We thank you for your presence during this week, and we ask you to give us eyes of faith to see you today. Hold us close to your heart that we may feel its beating in our souls. What renewal and power and assurance this will bring. Give us opportunities today to serve you and to serve other persons who shall cross our path this day. Through what we do may others sense your presence and goodness and power. Clothe our nation in the desire for respect among all persons. Drive hatred and intolerance from us and replace it with kindness toward all. This day move our hearts to sing the joy of your goodness and providence. In the name of the One who embodied your goodness and mercy to the very end, even Jesus Christ our Lord, we pray. Amen.
