Why did you decide to become a Veterinary Nurse/Tech?
Because I love taking care of others.
I chose to become a veterinary nurse because I wanted to use my compassion and desire for caretaking and make it my career. As a nurse/technician, we are by our patient’s side through every step of the way giving them the medical and emotional support they need. I love the feeling of performing a task that benefits the patient, contributing to their progression and seeing the outcome.

Why did you decide to become a Veterinary Nurse/Tech?
For the Snuggles and Kisses.
I became a veterinary nurse because I knew from a young age that I wanted to work with animals. I decided that I really liked the nursing aspect of veterinary medicine because we get to build bonds and relationships with our patients. We are the ones who perform the diagnostic tests, treatments, and everyday nursing care for our patients. I love being a veterinary nurse because I get to help bring our patients to their optimal health level and get snuggles and kisses along the way!
Every patient I have had has let a “paw print” on my heart.

Why did you decide to become a Veterinary Nurse?
Because I’ve always known.
I knew that I wanted to work with animals from a young age. In high school, I did a career exploration class where I learned about veterinary nursing which led me to do a work study program at a veterinary clinic. The veterinary technicians showed me what their work was like and I fell in love with it; they taught me how to restrain patients, obtain histories from clients, care for patients and so much more.

Why did you decide to become a Veterinary Nurse/Tech?
Because I love animals and people.
I became a veterinary nurse because I love to work with animals and people. I really enjoy interacting with people, to help them understand how we’ll be helping their furry family member, but I also love working one on one with animals as well. The best part about being a veterinary nurse is watching your patients get better and return to a healthy state.

The Indiana egg industry is laying golden eggs! We are the 3rd highest egg producing state with over 26 million laying hens and supports thousands of Hoosier jobs. Which is why #PurdueVetMed trains new vets to support this industry and provide resources in times of emergency as well. Like in 2015, when an outbreak of avian influenza struck the Midwest Our Dr. Pat Wakenell, now Professor Emerita, was critical to containing the outbreak.

Courtship displays are certain behaviors that animals perform in order to impress their potential female mates! These rituals may involve grooming or wrestling, and include flamboyant shows or colors and size. However, our favorite courtship display is the groovy moves shown by some of the most vibrant and interesting species in the world!
Male peacock spiders, blue footed boobies, and ostriches all put on their dancing shoes to alluringly show off to their picky female counterparts!

On the 8th Day of Vet Med, #PVM sent to me…...8 Dogs a’Drinking!
Many dog owners often ask their vets questions about water intake. “Is my dog drinking to little, too much, often enough?”
According to current literature, dogs should drink between 20-70ml (a tenth to a third of a cup) of water per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of bodyweight every day. Polydipsia, and the health issues corresponding with it, becomes a concern at volumes higher than 100ml/kg/day. On the contrary, adipsia is a major concern and is associated with very serious issues and happens when a dog drinks less than 20ml/kg/day.
Water is absolutely essential to canine health, and the range seen in the recommended water intake is due mainly to the different activity levels of dogs. If you have concerns about your dog’s health, please make an appointment with our Small Animal Community Practice service at https://purdue.vet/sapc

Happy New Year!
2020 was a difficult year for many people. We have faced challenges that none of us could have prepared for, but having turned the page onto 2021, it implores us to acknowledge the triumph of making it through the year. It took tremendous strength, loving family, and reliable friends to navigate through the hardships that 2020 held. As we begin to make strides into the new year with new lessons learned, remember the tenacity that pulled us through 2020, and let nothing stand in our way!
Take a page from Ducky’s book, and attack 2021 like he’s attacking his snowy stick!!

Fourth year for a veterinary student is when their work in classes end, and clinics begin! It is notoriously challenging, with long hours, new levels of responsibility, and work that necessitates the application of years’ worth of lectures and labs. However, students agree that it is as fun and exhilarating as it is difficult. The opportunity to work with clients and patients, nurses and clinicians, and other students in this capacity is not only integral to our college graduating confident and competent veterinarians, but also the very thing all students dream of when they set out on this adventure. Please join us in congratulations our 4th years on making it half-way through their clinical year!

Pursuing a veterinary education provides the unique opportunity to gain knowledge, build relationships, and create an exciting future as a young professional. It is also a time when students face immense pressure to excel academically and take on additional financial responsibility. Faculty and staff at #PurdueVetMed do their best to support students not only academically, but also as they navigate the “highs and lows” of college life. This year, a global pandemic resulted in additional challenges for everyone, but the steadfast philanthropic support of alumni, clients, and friends made an especially meaningful impact on students in need.

Happy Australia Day! Today is a day to celebrate everything that makes the land down under so magical. The wonders of Australia span many different domains, but where we are concerned, the best part of this Oceanic giant is their biodiversity, agriculture, and contributions to veterinary medicine.
Did you know that Australia is home to 600,000-700,000 different species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world? Or that Australia’s agriculture accounts for 1.7 million square miles of land use and employs almost 3% of the entire country’s population? Also, there are 7 veterinary schools in the country, and the Veterinary Sciences, University of Sydney is ranked 9th in the world!
Even though Australia is almost 10,000 miles away, it is very close to us here at #PurdueVetMed. Dr. Timothy Lecsun and Dr. J. Paul Robinson are our two resident Aussies. We also offer Student Exchange Partnerships, Study Abroad opportunities, and 4th year externships in Australia!

This is Chunk, and he’s one of the best parts of being at #PurdueVetMed!
He’s a five-year-old chocolate lab that has a squishy face, shiny coat, and an amazing personality! He spends school days relaxing in his mom’s office on his big comfy bed, but it doesn’t take much coaxing to get him up an enjoying the company of visitors! Chunk loves all types of affection, from a swift hello pat on the head to a lengthy belly rub; he makes a great pillow too!
You can often find him sprawled out right in the middle of the hallway, setting the trap for anyone who walks by so that he can get more pets. Whether he is tired, spunky, or trotting through his day, Chunk has an uncanny ability to make the vet students smile and take away some stress from their day!

I chose #PurdueVetMed because of the great sense of community that each professor, faculty member, and student brings to class every day. Everyone has a different background and a different area of interest but that doesn’t stop them from helping others meet their goals. Professors try their hardest to make sure that students are succeeding academically while other faculty members (such as the school therapist) make sure that students are mentally prepared and well. I not only experience the strong sense of community every day when I go to class, but I also experienced it when I had to bring my dog, Sammy, into the hospital for an emergency. He was treated with amazing care and compassion and I was comforted by knowing he was in amazing hands! Thankfully, Sammy is home and well and also happy that I chose PVM.

Oncology Pet of the Week goes to Simone!
Simone is a beautiful, 16-year-old seal point #Siamese who was diagnosed with pulmonary carcinoma back in 2016. She has routine checkups with the oncology team as she is on a type of oral chemotherapy. She is pictured with her favorite doctor, Dr. Reyes, who first helped diagnose and treat her cancer four and a half years ago as an intern here. He is now in his 3rd and final year here as a medical oncology resident.
Simone was found on the side of the highway when she was about six months old by her dad. Simone’s dad is extremely thankful to all the staff that have helped take care of Simone and his other feline friend, Elizabeth. When asked about Simone’s care given by the staff here, he noted:
“I will always be grateful to the amazing oncology department at Purdue. There are all- doctors, vet techs, vet students, and staff- not only the best in the world at what they do, but they care passionately about their patients and have hearts of gold. They saved my best friend’s life, and I can never thank them enough. Her prognosis was 1-3 months at best, and that was 55 months ago. I learned something new about my sweet little girl- she’s as tough as nails with an indomitable will to live.”
Give Simone some love today as she continues to battle lung cancer!

“What I love most about my #HBCU is its rich history and how I immediately fell in love with it the moment I stepped foot on campus. If given the opportunity to attend a TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY football game, Open House, Homecoming, or Fried Chicken Wednesday on the Yard you will understand the love and black excellence that pours out from all around the campus. Tuskegee is a place that truly reminds me of home. My HBCU experience is one I’ll never forget, it was my mother on days when I needed comfort, my father on days when I needed encouragement, my siblings when I needed to be reminded of who’s boss, my best friend on days when I just wanted to relax and have a good time but still needed to get to 8am classes after staying out all night. Tuskegee played many roles in my life but most of all Tuskegee was my greatest teacher, it taught me to always be true to myself, to accept life’s challenges because they often build character and resilience, to always be grateful for my experiences, and to never forget where I’ve come from and how important it is to keep going. Tuskegee laid the bricks from which my foundation is made, and I will always be grateful for my HBCU experience.” - Akila, 2nd year student at #PurdueVetMed

DVM Small Animal Focused Virtual Career Fair: March 6, 2021
My first ever job was serving as supervisor to my family dairy farm. At the age of 11 months, I took this position very seriously from a baby swing in our milking parlor. From a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a veterinarian -- In kindergarten I told my teacher that I was determined to be a “cow doctor”, and I never deviated from that goal.
I am so thankful for the opportunity to live and work on a dairy farm. Growing up working with cattle gave me a passion for the dairy industry and veterinary medicine. I will always be grateful for the countless life lessons I learned from taking care of our dairy cows. I’m excited for the day that I will play my role in the dairy industry as a food animal veterinarian—I can’t wait to give back to the industry that has given me so much already!

This happy boy has gone 10 for 10! He just finished his 10th session of physical rehab and he's down 10 lbs!

To kick things off, we’re going back to 2017 when Tina Turner presented to our Emergency Critical Care sector with ingestion of 29 tablets of Rimadyl (Carprofen). The lovely Ms. Turner was proven to be experiencing liver toxicity due to the overdose, and was declared a good candidate for hemodialysis. Thanks to the heroics of Dr. Steinbach and her Small Animal Internal Medicine team, Tina made a full recovery and was sent home after one 5-hour treatment!
