After earning an MD degree in Belgium, Dr. Vaiselbuh completed several residencies and fellowships, in adult as well as pediatric oncology. Dr Vaiselbuh received international training in the United Kingdom, The Netherlands and Australia before coming to the United States, where she build a foundation in basic science research at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Weill Cornell Medical College, NY studying leukemia cell biology.
Dr Vaiselbuh's heart and head express themselves best in her daily clinical care of children with cancer. She believes each child under her care is like a butterfly, waiting to break out of its cocoon to spread its wings. Therefore, the Butterfly was chosen as vignette for her division of pediatric oncology.
She specializes in histiocytic disorders (Center head of HistioCare- a speciality program for histiocytosis), pediatric leukemia and lymphoma, and her research focuses on exosomes (nanoparticles in the blood) as biomarkers of liquid biopsy in pediatric leukemia. She says that her intellectual battle of basic science helps her to overcome the emotional toll clinical oncology can take at times.
Dr Vaiselbuh is an active member of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology Oncology (ASPHO) where she functions as past and current chair of different committees. She has organized several symposia and workshops at ASP HO annual meetings. She also initiated the mentorship program at ASP HO as well as speed mentoring session to help guide young faculty in their career path choices. Dr Vaiselbuh is an excellent mentor herself testified by the numerous awards her young mentees have earned from
medical students, residents and fellows alike.
As a recent graduate of the Physician Leadership Program at Northwell Health, she continues to expand her leadership role in the field of oncology. Her ultimate goal is to deliver a coordinate approach to cancer, sharing Northwell Health's vision for our cancer patients: "To be better tomorrow then we are today."
