During the COVID-19 outbreak, our office is still operating under normal business hours. While we only have one person in the office each day, our attorneys are working remotely from home and have full email and telephone capabilities. We will be conducting meetings by telephone and video conference as much as possible. We will meet clients in-person only if essential, taking the necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of our clients and staff.
The "Taps Law Bunch" just wrapped up the 2020 Ohio Medicaid Manual Seminar for Attorneys. This was a 3-day seminar to train attorneys across Ohio about the Medicaid eligibility rules and methods.
We kicked off the seminar with this video, which seemed appropriate given the Zoom format we had to use due to the pandemic. Enjoy!
For those of you with loved ones in a long-term care facility (nursing home or assisted living) and on Medicaid benefits, the Federal Stimulus checks are NOT a resource that would negatively inpact Medicaid benefits. Don’t let the facility try to bully your loved one into giving them the money. Here is a good article from the Federal Trade Commission that talks about it.

If a deceased loved one receives a stimulus check, it should be returned to the government. There is a check box on the front of the envelope where you mark that the person is deceased and you are instructed to drop it in the mailbox.

An important note for anyone filing for unemployment compensation in Ohio during the COVID-19 outbreak:
Your unemployment compensation amount is calculated based on the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters. If you file for unemployment benefits before April 5, 2020, your benefits will be calculated based on your earnings from October 1, 2018 through September 30, 2019. If you file on April 5, 2020 or later, your benefits will be calculated based on your earnings from January 1, 2019 through December 31, 2019. See the ODJFS Worker's Guide to Unemployment Insurance, page 15 for further information (link below).
For many people, this distinction may not matter. But, if you had less earnings during 4th Quarter 2018 than 4th Quarter 2019, you may consider delaying your unemployment application until after April 5, 2020 to maximize your benefit amount.

Our director, Ursel McElroy, was honored to join Governor Mike DeWine, Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther, and Walgreens President John Standley at Crown Pointe Care Center in Columbus this morning. Crowne Pointe is one of the first nursing homes in the nation to begin administering #COVID19 vaccines to residents and staff.
