An Intentional Electoral Reminder.
We are just 8 days away from the #Official Election Day on November 3rd. While there is tremendous focus on this year’s presidential race, I want to remind all of us to vote #DownBallot in your state and local elections. This year has brought a heightened focus on the issue of justice system reform, so let me give a quick tutorial on why local elections matter:
State Legislators #WRITE the laws that determine categories and penalties of criminal offenses and what criminal convictions can be sealed.
County Prosecutors #MAKE charging decisions, present those charges to grand juries and represent “The State” or “The People” in all criminal matters.
Judges #DECIDE:
1. What evidence comes in or not at trial;
2. What sentence will be imposed if a criminal defendant is found guilty at trial or pleads guilty before trial;
3. If a juvenile who is charged with an offense or crime can be rehabilitated in the juvenile system or will be bound over to adult court;
4. If there has been an error or mistake during a trial court case that requires further review
5. Whether a criminal defendant is eligible to have record of conviction(s) sealed;
6. SOOOO much more.
#TheLesson? All politics is local. So pay attention to who is on the ballot in your local community and then vote like the issues you care about depend on your participation - because they do.

Tonight, I am happy to support ordinance 2416-2020 which authorizes Council to enter into a grant agreement with The Columbus Urban League to provide rental and mortgage assistance to residents impacted by COVID-19.
The $300,000 grant will help families struggling with job loss and other financial distress caused by the pandemic.
As of today, we have allocated over $10M to support direct rental assistance, mediation and legal representation, but we still have families in need of help. We must continue our efforts to keep families stably housed as we fight this pandemic.
