Getting a new kitten is an exciting time, but you also need to make sure your new friend is happy and healthy. HI Now host Kanoe Gibson is with Dr. Sakamoto at our sister hospital, VCA Kaneohe Animal Hospital, with the first steps new kitten owners should be taking. When pet owners first get a kitten, Dr. Sakamoto recommends taking them to a veterinarian to be checked out. “That would be our first recommendation because there are so many things that can happen to them, and it’s just good to have a professional take a look at kittens and make sure they’re okay before they get home,” says Dr. Sakamoto. “Any new client, any new patient, we offer a free first exam.” Not only does VCA Hawaii offer free first examinations for cats and kittens, but also for dogs and other animals. During that first exam, doctors may also suggest giving your kitten or pet some vaccinations. “Vaccines, just like dogs, are very important in cats,” Dr. Sakamoto says. Some of the viruses and pathogens doctors worry about in cats are the herpes virus, feline panleukopenia, and feline leukemia. Dr. Sakamoto explains that fleas and ticks are also a huge problem for pets in Hawaii, so these are another thing veterinarians look out for. We know you’re so excited to go on some autumn nature walks with your dog, but for this #FallSafetyTip, make sure you watch out for snakes, some of which can be venomous! They’re preparing for hibernation and may be a little crankier if disturbed by a curious pet! 🐍 When walking or hiking, if something happens to your pet, be sure to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. #VCApets
