William E. Johnson, III, M.D. is a native of Alabamian. Born and raised in Birmingham, he received a Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine in 1979. He completed a five-year general surgical residency at the University of Texas in Houston where he received the Waldron Award for outstanding surgical resident. Dr. Johnson completed a two-year combined cardio-thoracic and peripheral vascular surgical residence at the Texas Heart Institute with Dr. Denton Cooley. Dr. Johnson joined the practice in 1986.
Dr. Johnson is board certified in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery and has a special certification in vascular surgery issued by the American Board of Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Johnson is a member of the American Heart Association, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society, Cooley Hands, Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the Medical Society of Mobile County.
